privileged understudy in poetry

there’s worse things I
have been called than
a noble cause’s back-up plan
better than sleeping in
instead to make a stand
even and especially if I am found
to be unnecessary and
to the barest background bound
rather than a good ship drowned
I hope that I am useless but
I am readied nonetheless
proud in the knowledge offered free
that this is not about me
it’s a little bit about me
at best to just an ally be
but mostly not about me and
that’s okay
