unrequited in poetry

you can’t spell the
word “unrequited”
without the word “quit”
it sits there
right in the middle of it
clear as day
screaming out that the
heart of the situation is
you just have to quit

if it isn’t reciprocated
then it isn’t love
no matter how much you’ve
always wanted it to be

it’s something
it’s important
but it’s not love
it’s a crush maybe
it’s certainly a lust
it’s maybe even a kind
of unwise worship but
it’s not love

love cannot be forced
love’s formation cannot be manipulated
love cannot be created
love just sort of happens over time
forged standing back-to-back through struggles
forged face-to-face through travels and bottles of wine

if it’s love one way
it’s not love doncha know
if it’s just one way
let it go
let it go
