Time to check out of the ol Hotel 43, our “home base” for the last four days. Coffee, pack up, make sure the bill is paid, and ask the Valet for the car.
We discussed about getting out of Boise, then gassing up and a late breakfast. Driving westward on I-84, getting out of the Boise traffic for the morning. We are about 15 minutes late, no big deal. We have about 7 hours and 45 minutes, plus stops ahead of us.
About 45 to 60 minutes out of Boise a sign…HAAAAR!!! WELCOME TO OREGON. “We’re in Oregon”. “NO!!” “Yep, Oregon”. “Are we going the right way?” “Double check GPS and see, Baker City will be our fuel stop, in about 20 minutes” Yep, the fold out map and GPS SAYS!!!, you are on the right route. Psttt, don’t tell anybody, we’re in Oregon.
Baker City Pop. 6000
Baker City, OR. The Blue Mountains are in the background.
We took the first exit, and wound into town. Quaint, small rural small town. We found the Oregon Trail Motel and Restaurant. Now the Old Oregon Trail Motel reminds me of the Downtown Motel, in Pueblo, CO where the railroad put us up.. :)
Oregon Trail Restaurant:
The restaurant was an old dive, with lots of deer and antelope heads. Fish on the walls, and a hangout for the locals. It was a great breakfast, like a diner should be.
Time to head toward Couer d’ Alene. Drive toward Main Street and look for a gas station. Target sighted. A Chevron, and guess what!!, you can’t pump your gas between 600 am and 1000 pm, Oregon State Law.
The main drag at Baker City. The gas station that you see, ironically is the one we stopped at.

The terrain varies from rolling hills to a wide flat valley. Will be like this till we get into Spokane.
