It was good to get away from the “maddening crowd”. There is a little chaos, the mother of the bride is a lil stressed. The GUC’s are clucking. Lynn, she’s starting to make the egg dish for Sunday brunch. Terry, is finishing up other errands for tomorrow. I told my wife, I think I will head to the Depot, and I know I am the only one that is interested. The Depot is about a five to ten minute drive. It is roughly located south of Downtown Boise. Vikki and Terry’s house is halfway between the Depot and the Airport.
The Union Pacific mainline runs south of downtown and even south of the airport. Nampa is the terminal, yard, and crew change for the UP. This is the line westward to the Pacific Northwest and eastward Salt Lake City, UT, where they will join the “Transcon” for them. The track that runs past the Boise Depot is an active branch, and either a yard job or a local uses it. the rails have a little polish to them, but I am guessing one or two trains. I have never seen any action on it, when we have visited in the past.
Boise Depot:
The City now owns this, and the property. They are also caretakers of the Mikado steam locomotive, “Big Mike”, that the Union Pacific donated.
The Tower and main entrance to the Boise Depot
The “old” multiple entrances, which are no longer open or available for use
The far left view, which is part of the old freight house
The rear of the Depot and the brick platform. You can see the old mainline, which is now a branchline. You can see that other tracks have since been removed
The west side of the Depot. “Big Mike” is fenced in to the right
The old style Overland Route Union Pacific emblem
The Boise Platform Station Sign
Big Mike is next … Thanks for reading.
