Towards the end of World War Two a British Lancaster Bomber aircraft asked to land at a American Air Base, they told the British aircraft to land and asked how much ordnance they were caring; the responded was 20,000 lb!
The Pilot of the Lancaster heard some words in the tower, about the Brits telling tails, the Lanc landed in the dark and cars and trucks rolling to see 20,000lb of ordnance, the cars and trucks lights on a huge bomb hanging under the Lancaster, it was a Grand Slam Earthquake bomb of 20,000lb’s; at that time no American bomber could carry a Grand Slam.
After the war some B-29’s were modified to carry the RAF’s largest bomb, The Massive – 43/B Massive Ordnance Air Blast Bomb were doing much the same job; the 43/B is slim and must hit the ground faster.
