Storm Doris in The View from the Terrace

The UK is slowly recovering from storm Doris. On Wednesday night I woke to go to the bathroom at about 6am and could hear a strange knocking coming from downstairs. When I went down I found two windows wide open in the living room blowing in the wind. The curtains, which were outside the window, were soaked but luckily no glass broken. We were lucky, a friend had a tree come down and an iron bar on her gate broken. Thursday I had a duty at my voluntary job. The traffic on the approach to town was backed up for a good mile but it turns out I was lucky to get in at all as the road had only just been opened after an incident near the Asda store. Apparently the roof on their petrol station looked as though it was going to be blown off and the police had closed the road and the bridge over the river in case it did. Another volunteer had to get off the bus and walk the long way around into town. There is virtually only one way into Hereford on the south side so traffic was diverted down narrow country roads to the next river bridge. They opened the road again about 5 minutes before I got there.

I saw on the news that a plane crash landed at Amsterdam airport after the wind damaged it’s landing gear. Fortunately no one was hurt but it must have been scary. It is funny because I have a friend called Doris who put up a message on Facebook asking everyone to stop blaming her for all of this damage as she hadn’t even been out for 2 days!

It’s still blowing pretty hard but not so much as a few days ago. Good for drying the washing at least.
