I had set my alarm for 5:30 am so that I could wake up, shower, eat breakfast, and get to work early to take care of some things I had wanted to take care of during the weekend (but couldn’t due to illness).
I woke up at 8:00 am, took a quick shower, and raced to work.
Though… my dreams were… telling. Like switching back and forth between channels, there were two dreams going on at once. In one, it was a much darker and more violent Terminator 2. My favorite part is when one of Sarah Connor’s friends is trying to determine which person in a large group is the T-1000 when he realizes it is disguised as a three year old kid. He kicks the kid into the street to get slammed by a semi-truck. As I said… dark and more violent. The other “channel” going on interspersed was me “at work” but… it was work and wasn’t. The offices were much nicer, each office had a window was well painted, and had plenty of space. But Boss was still working… still losing more of her mind each day… so Cecilia and I were basically running things and cleaning up the messes while still trying to let Boss feel like she was in charge and doing a good job. Those two dreams happening at once.
Got into the office and acknowledge sincerely that there are a number of things I must do.
(1) I must respond to Ye’s e-mail and ask about insurance. Because no insurance offered in a Private Firm job… there is no point in negotiating. I was offered an Associate’s Position in DM at “30k with a bonus structure.” Structure breaks down to 50% of cases I bring to the firm; 15% on cases I help the firm with. If I were bringing multi-million dollar cases, that would be one thing… but as a new attorney… typically you are bringing cases ranging from $60 an hour to $200 an hour… and that is best case scenario. Most attorneys I have spoken with (and many of you lovely people I’ve reached out to) have said “40k with bonus is far more standard and appropriate. And if they don’t offer insurance; tell them to get stuffed with their offer.”
(2) I need to respond to my Aunt Carol’s e-mail. Aunt Carol is a networking BEAST. This is a woman who saw the “Paint Protests” at the Ferguson Riots and within 2 months; she’d published a Children’s Book about the protests and started a Community Organization to teach Art Not Violence. Seriously… the woman is a force of nature. True, that means she has been rather nightmare-ish on several holiday occasions but… I’m never “above” releasing Loki when necessary, if you get my drift.
(3) POINTLESS Mental Health Hearing today. The man has nuked his brain with Meth. His sister is married to one of our Sheriff’s Deputies. The man is going around accusing the world of bugging his house and surgically grafting a listening device into his skin. AND YET… the Mental Health Doctors won’t see him because (quote from their report) “His problem is drug induced and not of a genuine mental health variety.” So.... we send him to a rehab facility. And the rehab facility says, “The patient shows no signs to indicate he requires in-patient service. Therefore, out patient services should begin immediately.” And then he never keeps his out patient appointments. So… that is this case. Pointless. Stupid. With little we can do since we can’t legally over-ride the Medical Opinions.
(4) Tragic paperwork. There is a man who is a severe alcoholic. He got drunk and sexually assaulted an underage mentally deficient girl. Boss made the deal; but I had to present it to the courts (because she had already retired). So I get to announce Probation and no jail time for this guy. WITHIN 24 HOURS of this pronouncement, the guy is picked up for public intoxication. Because he went to the Sheriff’s Office to sign up for Probation Assistance… and was drunk when he did it. So… he is definitely going to do some jail time now. The question becomes… will he get a sentence long enough to put him in Prison (out of county) thus actually required to do the time; or will he be sentenced to Jail (in county) thus deferred until such time as we have space which is never.
Those are the only things that 100% actually, specifically, desperately NEED to get done. We’ll see how much more I do?
