Happy New Year

We had a quiet night in. We’d just fired up the aircon and a movie on Netflix when my brother comes running into the lounge room asking me if I’d heard the window smash next door. We were oblivious.

10 minutes later, about 7pm, my brother returns to tell us that an ambulance had just pulled up next door. We looked out the window and the Father was inside the ambulance being treated by the medics. There was an undercover cop car across the street and then suddenly two paddy wagons pull up, one parking on our front verge.

A few weeks ago my neighbor told me her adult kids and their partners had flown in from Brisbane to spend Christmas with the family. We’d heard them being rowdy and it sounded like there were a lot of people staying there. Maybe as many as 10. Leading up to the visit the neighbors had been spending a lot of time doing up their back yard shed into a break out lounge room.

So we went out into the back yard and heard the cops talking saying they wondered where all the blood was? Surely there would be a lot of blood. Then we heard the TV being turned down in the back yard shed and lots of talking. We then wandered out to the front and I saw Tommy speaking to the cops. Tommy is their youngest son who is 17 and is the next grade up at the same school as my daughter.

As we walked out the front one of the cops talking to Tommy takes a phone call and walks towards our direction stopping just short. I’m not sure who he was talking to but was telling them what they had found. Apparently the Father had been pushed through the window by his Wife and when the police arrived she was found standing over him with a knife in her hand!

Anyway I got a chance to ask Tommy if everything was OK and that we were here if he needed anything. Then we went back inside to continue watching our movie in the aircon.

About 10pm the police knocked on the door and asked if we’d heard anything. Our movie had almost finished by this time. I told him what we’d overheard and asked if Tommy was on his own or if his parents were at the house. The policeman confirmed Tommy was home alone with no parents so I asked him to let Tommy know we were here if he needed anything.

Tommy is a bit of a street rat so I wasn’t too worried. He can look after himself for a few days. I remember last summer he told me he had been driving for a year without his licence because he didn’t want to read the learners book. I told him that’s all well and good until he gets pulled over by the police and gets a criminal record all because he didn’t want to read a book. About 3 months later he told me he’d done the right thing and sat his learners test.

So I think the Mother was taken to the police station and charged and the father was taken to hospital. The Mother wouldn’t have been processed until Tuesday because of the public holidays. It looks like she has been processed though because it’s now Wednesday and I saw both the Father and Mother return home to the house from work. Pure crazy.

I spoke with my neighbor on the other side yesterday. Her name is Christine, she’s in her 60’s and she is really friendly. When we first moved in she invited us to her Zumba class and we would take walks around the neighborhood together. During those walks she knew everyone. She’s a very outgoing person.

Anyway I had a gossip with her about the events on NYE and she told me it’s not the first time the neighbor has tried to stab her husband. She attempted to stab him about 6 months ago! Christine told me that she avoids her because she seems unstable and gets crazy when she drinks. I think I agree with Christine.

Christine and her husband are building a house about 5 doors down. It’s a massive thing and really impressive. She mentioned that they’re hoping to move into it soon and I was surprised as all their kids are grown up and they’re in a nice little 3 bedroom house with small yards. Usually people downsize once their kids have left. I asked her what they were planning to do with their current house and she said if they rent it she’ll come speak with me first as she thinks we’re amazing tenants. Wouldn’t that be funny, moving next door.
