It’s been 21 years since I was in my high school choir. I was in the performance choir where we would go around performing for various audiences. It was considered the “highest” choir in the school. We sang in 4 to 6 part harmony in most songs. I was a soprano back then and if you know anything about choirs you know that sopranos normally sing the melody. So I didn’t have to learn a lot of tricky harmony.
Fast forward to today.
I started my first practice for a play I am in. We are doing Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat. (LOVE THIS PLAY) We ran through all the songs just one time to familiarize everyone with the feel of the play. I don’t have a huge part. I am just part of the chorus. So we went through the music and the director told us to just practice singing the chorus parts. So the songs are really high. Wow. My soprano voice is not quite what it used to be so I am thinking I am more alto now. That’s where all the harmonies are and don’t have a lot of experience with that. I am feeling a bit nervous.
Everyone in the play is really good. Nice strong voices. Then there is me. I am shy and timid and must find a way to come out of my shell before I get swept in the back and forgotten about.
I am still very excited about this experience though. My next practice is in two days. I need to figure out a way to get past my shyness before then.
