Note: This is a little looser than what I would write to post here. It’s more inexact and maybe I said some nasty things about people that I would at least twice about before posting here. Maybe I’m wrong. But anyway, here it is. Only slightly, maybe not at all, edited for your consumption.
I let the fire go all the way out last night/this morning and now at 7:30-ish AM I am sitting beside the furnace as it tries to resurrect. It sounds better now. I am in my red robe and the washer is washing the clothes I’ve worn the last few days - the corduroy pants and sweater, both tannish, both purchased from the same on sale rack at the south Lacrosse Good Will a few years ago with the hope that they would be big enough for the expanding me. The pants are now tight - what can I tell you?
When I got up 5-ish AM and went to the bathroom and discovered the fire to be totally defunct I went back to bed with the August 29 New Yorker. I had taken it in the the bathtub last night and read a review of a movie called Lo and Behold: Reveries on the Connected World, directed by Werner Herzog about the internet. The review said the closest thing we had to sci-fi predictions of the internet was I can’t remember who or when said that there would be a box for students to access everything that had ever been written. Movie is a documentary. They talked to a man named Danny who remembered when there were only three Dannys on the internet and he knew the other two. Different, the reviewer said, than now when each of your three Shih-Tzus have their own Twitter accounts. Reviewer said it was strange that the movie did not mention internet sex.
Anyway that was last night. This morning I found untold riches in the the late last summer New Yorker. I found a book review account of the riots at Attica prison in up state NY. They occurred in September 1971. They were an accident, they were during the general discord of the end of the 1960s. Kent State is mentioned, that was the spring of 1970 when national guard killed student demonstrators. Nixon is mentioned. His tapes include deliberations on the prison uprising. He is described as racist and alcoholic. The new book is called Blood in the Water and the author is Heather Ann Thompson. Such an innocent name.
Then I read about Michael Heizer. That must not be his name because Google is struggling big time with it. He is in his early 70s, making him a child of the Attica and Kent State 60s. He mentions appearing before a draft board but he wasn’t drafted, no details as to why not except of course he was crazy and from a rich and influential family. He has this massive art installation in Nevada, a mile and a half long by a quarter mile wide, made of homemade concrete and moved soil and minerals. He created voids and extractions. It is supposed to be finished and open by 2020. He is in NYC now doing paintings which are selling and he has his border collie Tomato Rose with him. Tomato Rose looks like she’s putting on some weight in the city.
And then I found a poem about blue heron feet that reminded me of LBH. It starts and ends with Balanchine, the ballet guy, quotes.
Then I found a cartoon of a field of sheep looking at a billboard of a fox with one sheep saying to another, at least he tells the truth.
THEN I found a photo ad, black and white picture of half a dozen very intense though at rest ballerinas under guess what? Another of Balanchine’s quotes.
So that was a good New Yorker. I still need to read more. I want to read more. I will read more, but it was just a lovely discovery.
ps Google found Michael Heizer - it just took a while. Funny, Blood on the Water and Lo and Behold came up quicker. Balanchine spelled wrong took a long time too. Maybe first google searches come up quicker than subsequent ones. Might be the internet rationing curiosity. What do you think? (google image Heizer is you’re curious. Fantastic stuff)
This 750 words turned into a Prosebox entry. I’d like to photo the poem and the cartoon and the ballerinas and put them in the entry too. (and so I did)
Today is my last day off. I am kind of ok with it. I woke up feeling awful. I went through a bunch of money, health, future stuff that is not good or optimistic. But maybe I’ll be ok. We will see.
Fareway is open. I think I’ll load up my cans and go to town. I need to shop for food I can eat. Ha ha ha.
grapes
bananas
celery
oh heck I have a whole string of stuff. determine viability of refrigerator carrots.
