hope is a hummingbird in poetry

hope is a hummingbird
tiny and nimble
easily crushed
can fit in a thimble

hope cannot sleep
would die if it did
but can fall into comas
when its well-hid
rest for a while

hope drinks its own weight
in nectar every day
that’s the only way it can live
put a feeder in your backyard
someday if you haven’t
you’ll wish you did

gleaming like a rainbow
and even more fragile
as easy to miss
as impossibly agile
it will stay if you feed it
so I have heard
hope is a hummingbird
