Meanwhile, in more positive news, I just cracked 50k on Day Nine of NaNoWriMo. What blows my mind is I managed only a thousand or so words on the first day, and then just barely brought myself to par on the second and third days. Then on the fourth day, somehow, I found my muse and EXPLODED.

Based on the length of the “First Act”, I estimate the total length will be 80-90k. Should easily best my previous effort of 76k. Frankly, while I have “the month”, I want to finish principle writing by the 21st. Reading through and editing something of this length is a massive undertaking. Not to downplay my previous accomplishments, but most of them are kind of meandering messes. Entertaining meandering messes, but very meandering and not as focused.

There’s absolutely no fluff in this. Everything deals with the main character in some way. There’s no dream sequences for the hell of it. There’s no using cheese as a plot device. Okay, I do have one sequence with a dildo factory, but it’s not me without inane antics. AND LULZ FOR ALL. Otherwise, this may be the most serious thing I’ve ever written.

As in, editing/revising means changing things so I get the tone and feels as powerful as possible. And like I said, with something this length, IT TAKES TIME.

Anyway. 5th NaNoWriMo ‘win’. Where’s my merit badge and complementary cookie?

Congratulations! I do this every year, including CampNano in July, but I barely lasted a day this month because I just didn't have enough of a good idea. I'm actually finishing up a 61K word book I wrote during August and September and editing it now.

That's right, I've been on there so long, I didn't have to "TM" it. : D

This is my fifth win. Woo.

Lady Rainbow just added you. :)

Don't let my wordcount intimidate you. If you check my list of novels, I have plenty of false starts. : )

Jodi Timmy™ ⋅ November 11, 2016

Me too. I actually prefer to write short stories. Out of the 35 stories or so I've written only a few are over 50K words.

Timmy™ Jodi ⋅ November 11, 2016

I usually meander and then try to wrap it up after 50k or near the end of the month. This is the first time it feels like, well. THERE'S A STORY. OMG. But it's still character based, so I could easily add extra "episodes" if I wanted, to strengthen the emotional arc of the main character.

Jodi Timmy™ ⋅ November 11, 2016

I get most of my ideas from dreams and I can never "force" an idea or inspiration. I either have it or I don't.

Timmy™ Jodi ⋅ November 11, 2016

I just wrote a spontaneous scene where my characters decided to give their waitress a Lesbian Sandwich. So much fun.

Now scenes where you want your characters to express certain feelings, it's tricky getting dialogue to where they say things.

If I'm strapped for inspiration, I ask myself "What's the best/worst case scenario?" usually drawing from life.

Jodi Timmy™ ⋅ November 11, 2016

Funny you should mention drawing from life because I base many of my characters and experiences on real life people I know and experiences I've had. "Shaylin" has a pet rat named Burke and so do I.

My first (two) novel(s) were just me fictionalizing my childhood. Meandering, but entertaining. I tried other styles, but went back to it again another year, this time with ... A LIGHT ARCING PLOT. GASP. Came out fantastic and is still my favorite.

The fourth one I finished? Told entirely in flashback by a guy sitting in a room arguing with his (named) id, ego, and superego. Drawing on life experiences? . : D
