Awright…

It’s the day before the Big Election and I have yet to turn in my ballot. I have until 7PM tomorrow to git ‘er done, and I will git ‘er done!

At every election time I think of my Lithuanian grandfather who passed away on Election Day (in 1986? He was born in 1889…). At first, he hadn’t wanted to go vote, but after my mom returned from the polling place, he said he wanted to go.

Mom took him to the polling place where they had those big, ol’ machines that registered your vote by recording your ballot as you opened the curtain.

He voted, but suffered a ruptured aorta as he opened the curtain.

The ambulance took him to the hospital where they said they could revive him. But - being 97-1/2 years old AND after having a good, full life, my mom decided to let him go…his dignity still intact.

I’m reminded of my grandfather every Election Day, when I think of or work on my Allis-Chalmers tractors, when I feed my chickens, and I often think:

“What would Tivoli do?”
