My sister had to put Sadie to sleep and she is devastated. I know the feeling all too well. Sadie was a cool little dog even if she did want to chew your face off if you got too close to my sister sometimes. Little dog, big attitude. She loved to cuddle on the couch and tear up window blinds. I think she was about 17-18 years old? She had a long and loving life. Still heartbreaking nonetheless. She keeps expecting to see Sadie on the couch or try to run out the door when she bring in groceries. I think it’s going to take longer for her to get over this one than it did when she had to put Ebony down. And that one was really hard for her, too. Ebony was my sister-dog. She got me through a rough patch when I was a teen, so when it came to the point where we had to put her to sleep it was hard for us all.
I don’t know what I’m going to do when it’s time for Skittles and Tyson. A few years back when Skit developed IVDD (Intervertebral Disc Disease) it scared us to death. The options were wait and see, surgery, or if it got worse, put him down. The slipped disk was so high that the prospect of paralysis wasn’t an option. Like dogs in their little wheelchair things? This would have caused respiratory problems. We chose wait and see. He was on crate rest for a month, and now we have to make sure he doesn’t get too wild. Even at 7 years old he can still get crazy. But every once in a while he’ll move funny and let out a yelp and it makes me pause, waiting to see how he acts afterwards.
Tyson is healthy as a horse, being only 3. He runs like the wind and jumps so high to catch balls and Frisbees. I worry about that, though because he could land funny and hurt himself. I’ve seen that too many times working at the animal hospital. Ty is my “therapy” dog. He is always in my face when I’m mentally fucked up. He’ll literally hug me.
I want them both to live forever.
Seeing that Floyd and Alice lived so long I know we take damn good care of our fur kids. Floyd and Al were both around 18 years old when their time came. It doesn’t mean that I didn’t cry like a fool when it happened. ::sigh:: Just thinking about them makes me get verklempt.
::sigh::
I need more coffee now.
Later.
