the heart in summer in poetry

we’re all under the same sky
but the position of the stars
is at least a little different
depending who and where we are
that girl you maybe adore
but haven’t seen in years
under those very same stars
though they’re slightly shifted
by the planetary gears

it’s the kind of summer night
so goddamned Movie Set Perfect
so beautiful it makes you feel
lonely despite yourself
that positive kind of loneliness
where you feel so good about it all
you’re just sad it’s all unshared
all that awesome up on the shelf
passions covered up
in a thin layers of dust
arms that ache to hold
want to knock off the rust

the universe above us
is more or less the same
but if the beauty feels
a little melancholy
it’s just the distance
that’s to blame
