A few hours ago - plus forty-seven years - Neil Armstrong said those words as he first set foot on the Moon.
The Lunar Excursion Module ‘Eagle’ had landed on the Moon at 20:56 UTC the day before, and now the first human being was on the lunar surface.
I remember that day, evening, and night very well. My parents let me stay up to watch the broadcast, and in retrospect, how fascinating it was to not only be a witness to history, but to be aware of the dangers of space exploration and how these three men were literally putting their lives on the line.
Fast-forward to this weekend when the Space Shuttle team is having their first-ever reunion at Kennedy Space Center. It’s a three-day event starting at 4:00pm on Friday, a barbeque/picnic at KARS Park (Kennedy Athletic, Recreational and Social) on Saturday, and the KSC Visitors Center - with the Shuttle ‘Atlantis’ - on Sunday.
I’m looking forward to seeing the good people from America’s space program again. A lot has changed in the sixteen years since I moved to Colorado, but…
We made history.
