The sky is angry today. Sheets of water streaming down, flooding the streets. The sky cracking and shouting intermittently; firing haphazard flashes of light into the pitch of what should be a sunny day. The storms, and their intensity, continue.
And on days like this, when it is as dark as 3 am all day; I wish I could have just stayed home. There’s no point in a digital world to oar your car through the rivers of street; especially in a quiet town like this. When the sky opens up and the rains pour down; most of the business simply ceases for a day. Except ours. Because “Suit & Tie Professionals” are an oddity around here. But what I do today could very likely have been accomplished from home. And the eight to nine hours expected of me here; I could have completed the work in four hours at home… then read, sipped tea, taken a nap, played video games, finish the dishes. Ah well. There is a reason why the United States is a “Corrections” Country now. We don’t see adult labor or adult work as “Benefiting to the masses.” Too often, whether a jail cell or an office building, it isn’t important what is being done. It is merely important to have someplace to put people. And, for now at least, this is mine.
Call me Pathetic but this actually sounds nice right about now.
In other random bits of information… articles in the United States and Britain have come out today to decry the dumbass that claimed that white people/western civilization has done the most good for the planet earth. Not only painting himself as even more of a racist than he already has, but also 100% ignoring any and all contributions to the planet that have been made by countries like Asia (who gave us via Marco Polo and others things like silk, gunpowder, etc). And of course… this dumbass… is the beloved representative for Tiny Town’s congressional district. Because, apparently, a bigot who has openly belittled gays and minorities… who hangs a confederate flag in his office DESPITE the fact that this state was always a Union State… yeah, this guy is who the people of my new community consider to be “the best representation of who they are,” Fucking ridiculous.
And more on “Boss” front. Her current secretary was in our office today asking if she could help us with anything. I mentioned that Boss says she’s swamped and that’s why she can’t help me with anything. The eyeroll was audible! Boss, according to secretary, isn’t too busy. She’s too disorganized, too technology-phobic, and too wrapped up in her own shit. She’ll simply… not work… for the entire morning… and then an hour before the day is over… get worked up into a frenzy because there is so much to do and so little time to do it. So Cecilia and Boss’ secretary have been talking… and they both vehemently agree that Boss should have retired TEN YEARS AGO. Which… forgive me for extrapolating too far… is a big deal in the Legal World. A lot of people have hit their golden years… the times when they should be considering retiring, selling their firms, or promoting someone to partner. BUT they are certain that they can be as effective of an attorney at 80 as they were at 30. SOME of them can be. But the whole thing causes a problem. Instead of allowing new law students to enter the job market, new law students are being charged more for law school and then being told there are no jobs. And trust me… this is not “Lawyer Glut”. That was in the late 80s and throughout the 90s. Then lawyers started to taper off in favor of more “Now” jobs like computers. So we see a decrease in number of available lawyers (as experienced by how many lawyer jobs in small communities are open and available) but it comes at the same time that the older generations aren’t “making the space.” Honestly, if Boss had retired ten years ago; it is very likely that the current County Attorney would have been (1) young enough; and (2) invested enough to give a damn about training the Assistant. Just my 2 krona.
Bah. It is midday. Still dark as night outside. The rain has given us a brief reprieve but that is mostly to deal with the poorly built roads that have now opelny declared their intentions to become lakes or rivers. The day has been slow. No phone calls, no new cases, no ability to go to the courthouse if anything new did pop up. It is truly a day where I wish I could have lain in bed, sipped tea, and read. The world has requested a skip day… the sun is not shining, the roads are becoming more and more impassable, the rain and thunder are never far off… truly, I should have stayed home.
