her eyes in poetry

her eyes nearly dark as the night
her eyes comforting as the night
the deep soothing quiet of the night
peaceful at the surface sheen
roiling with potential beneath

I could tell you about her legs
seven feet long on a six foot woman
I could tell you about her wit
I could tell you about the wisdom
of her varied wandering life so far
but those dark eyes
captivated me a quarter century ago
in Schoff’s seventh-grade English

when I see a picture of her now
both of us now thirty-something
instead of twelve years old
they captivate me still
those eyes never changed

God help my bleeding heart
they’re still as deep and dark
as the soothing still of night
