mad dog twenty-twenty hindsight in poetry

yeah it used to be
we could escape the cold
in the hot embrace
of rock ‘n’ roll
we can still go there now
but it’s no longer as warm there

yeah it used to be
we could pretend we were cool
just by impressing
the younger kids at school
with our big words and our cars
but we no longer pass for kids
not with all these gray hairs

now the days stick in
like a butter knife
can’t drink as much
to get through the night
we all grew up
but we all stayed broke
the old college booze
now it makes us choke
not because we became liquor snobs
no, our guts got ruined by our jobs…

yeah it’s not all good
no it’s not all bad
there were idiocy in the times we had
just as desperation fills the coffers now
but don’t blame us if we wish
for the best of both somehow
