- We were still living in New Castle, New Hampshire.
Alan Shepard was the first American in space (what a long way we’ve come since then!), my youngest brother at the time turned two, and if we rode a bicycle, we a) had to have it licensed (free), and b) weren’t allowed to ride it in the wintertime.
I don’t remember the move back to Rhode Island later that year, but we stayed there for about a year and a half. My third-grade teacher was Mrs. Devlin; her sister, Miss Murphy, had the second-grade class in the next room.
Math was kinda hard for me, but I did learn my ‘times’ tables all the way up to 9x9, the ‘Twist’ was popular, and in music class, Miss Wiley - surprised to see me - blurted out, “Where’d YOU come from???” (I musta had a crush on her… :-) )
Then…it was back to New Hampshire - Rye Beach this time I missed - narrowly - having Miss Cate for fourth grade, but got Miss Kelly for English instead, at at Maude H. Trefethern Elementary.
Details on Rye Beach, horses, Pease Air Force Base, Abenequi Golf Course, my slide trombone, and much more later.
