I am ashamed to report my experience with mood altering substances of the 60’s and 70’s was significant. Many of us had the misconception through misguided writings and speech that one could aspire to be Dr. Timothy Leary with wisdom swirling in waves like wind blown wheat.

When I was in my high school years there was click’s like most would expect in the school setting. There were the jocks which in my unfair assessment at the time were nothing more than self absorbed drunks. Slobbering fools who you hoped did not attend the gatherings of those of us who toked and swallowed whole our social distortion. These opinions were unfair and were part of our immaturity and more quiet nature. High-fiving ass slapping partiers we were not. On the other end were the “more nerdier” bunch but not as a criticism for many of us academics were probably considered nerds too. Just the nerds who grew their hair long, did drugs and somehow over achieved at school. Finally in hindsight the rest were the real brains of the bunch for no other reason than they chose to be neither.

LSD and mescaline, regardless of what one might have seen on TV or read somewhere is not all dumbfounded swirling images masking reality leaving one staring off into space. The world remains but shimmers and pulsates or comes in waves. If you quickly run your hand across your vision you see vapor trails of the image. This is some of the visuals only to much greater degree one may experience. Regarding thought process, I took a chemistry test on mescaline once and a lot mathematic formula’s work was required and I did exceptional well. It didn’t make me better or worse.

But in no way I am implying anyone should do such things. It physically wears on you. You truly “burn out” and like many things more is needed over time as you try to achieve the same experience. A college neighbor in the dorm was doing a lot of tripping (failing miserably in school) and started preaching and thinking he was an extension of the power of his creator. When he told me he picked up a cat and then miraculously turned the one cat into two it was time to mosey on down the hallway and find more comfortable conversation.

Like many risky behaviors when logic may be distorted we can look at an image like the above and see something very artful or others may look to close, to deep within their own disturbed imagery and the bizarre may become something to fear and panic over. It isn’t all puffy clouds in blue skies that look like ponies. Some images masquerade as the devil.... the devil within and. like Alice, you don’t know whether you become large or small until you swallow. Then it is too late.
