Capt Eric ‘Winkle’ Brown CBE DSC AFC as died after a short illness, he was the most decorated pilot of the Fleet Air Arm, because of his diminutive height he was know as ‘Winkle’ short for ‘Periwinkle’
He has three entries Guinness World Records, First landing of a jet-aircraft on a aircraft-carrier, the number of aircraft carrier deck landings – 2,407 and the number types of airplane’s flown – 487.
During the Second World War Capt Eric Brown survived 11 plane crashes, met Churchill and King George VI several times and was at the liberation of Bergen Belsen. At the wars end he was in Germany looking for the advance aircraft, while there he interrogated a number of Nazis, Heinrich Himmler, Hermann Goering and Belsen’s chief guards Josef Kramer and Irma Grese.
Eric ‘Winkle’ Brown was working in a time of great advance in aircraft, it is thought his record’s are unlikely to be matched. In his life he saw the rapid advance of aircraft design; also he saw the depth that humans can go to …..
There are people I regard as great people, but Eric ‘Winkle’ Brown I consider a hero.
