I’d get in conversations with the crows of Syracuse
I’d caw at them in the trees at night
they’d caw back down at me on the ground
we had an understanding, the crows and I

now I’m not there
but people like me are
those crows aren’t there
though their far-descendants are
and I’d be disappointed to discover
that there aren’t conversations like that still
that there aren’t understandings like that still
between the disaffected student and
the blackbirds up among the leaves

but it’s not my place to be disappointed now
the time for drunken conversations with the crows
passed a long long time ago
I’m here now
they are there
I just hope they have some friends
