Happy New Year!

I think having this Surgery rotation over the holidays made it the best it could have been. There weren’t that many scheduled procedures, meaning fewer patients to take care of, fewer appointments, fewer discharges to write, etc. I also think I lucked out on which surgeons I ended up working with. The three residents I worked with were the nicer, more patient of the six. I also didn’t get stuck with the extra challenging senior clinicians. I am seriously so relieved. I have one more 12 hour on call shift tomorrow that I have to show up for the beginning of in case we get any transfer patients and, if I don’t get called in for an emergency surgery, I’m done. Even if I do get called in, it will be OK because the resident on call is really nice.

I’m just so happy that this rotation wasn’t a nightmare like it has been for so many other students. I also got a little better at my orthopedic exam and could often feel abnormalities the doctors did or, if I missed something, the resident also missed it and it was minor and discovered by a senior clinician. Also, one of the emergency surgeries I got called in for was a thoracotomy. I saw live lungs inhaling and exhaling (while the patient was on a ventilator) and they are beautiful and bubblegum pink! And I got a few glimpses at the heart!! That was probably one of the coolest things I’ve ever seen. I’m really pleased I got to experience that as open chest surgeries are not done in general practice. Also, our patient did well and went home a couple days ago :)

Also, once this rotation is over Monday morning, I’ll be 2/3 done with my clinical year. I can barely believe it.
