I had forgotten how wretchedly shitty this Law Library is. I’d been gone for almost a week… no overtime allowed now, so I hit my max in the Law Library by Tuesday afternoon last week! Come in this morning to realize… ah yes. No overtime means “more time at home and with friends” but it also means… work stacks up. Especially when no assistance is given. My paperwork stack (paperwork to answer) has grown from its usual “few hundred” to over 3,000. And, as there was no assistance present over the weekend… despite going rock star last week and getting through 20 Mods in Two Days… we are now (still/again) 12 Mods behind. In other words… Two Days of Extra work. Fucked again!
This despite the fact that my boss assured me that he would get some help in the Law Library. After all, COs have an overtime budget so they need to help out since they won’t allow Programs to have an overtime budget. Yeah… that didn’t seem to be a convincing argument since nobody was here! Less pleasant… my trainee isn’t here today, either. So… is he quitting? Is he just a big flake? Who knows!
And, as the paperwork stack is just about the size of my desk… it takes me my first three and half hours of the day just to get through paperwork. Largely because there are LOADS of bullshit Kites where it was clear a CO didn’t care (1) what the inmate wanted; and/or (2) what the law library actually does. As there was a lot of paper work clearly addressed to PUBLIC DEFENDER or JUDGE SOnSO… but of course, the COs just throw it in Law Library’s Paperwork Pile. They know that the jail has no direct access to those people… but instead of dealing with it… lets make it Law Library’s problem. Nobody gives a shit about that place anyway! Truly frustrating. Especially as, not surprisingly, I have limited time to dedicate to this place with the No Overtime Mandate and a maximum of 22 available hours to be in the Law Library. So… when I have to spend 3.5 hours on Paperwork (much of it that shouldn’t have been placed in my pile to begin with)… that means I really only have about 18 hours to get through all of the MODs. An even greater challenge as one must now take the 29 Weekly Mods and add 12 to that so I can try to catch up! 18 hours and over 40 MODs? Of course that can logically happen.... wait, no. That’s bullshit. That couldn’t logically happen in any way, shape, or form.
I realize that it is a damned awful thing to think here; but between my wife’s increased criticism and bullshit, my continuing downward spiral about finding a job, and my jail-work clusterfuck bullshit… I’m more inclined then ever to simply ask Work Crush out for a drink. Or try to get to know one of the five attractive female COs around here. SOMETHING to make me feel good about myself for a change.
As if the work shit wasn’t bad enough as is… I just got a call from my Boss. Apparently, Work Crush and I cost too much. So we have to now make DAILY accounting of how we’re spending our time. Excuse me? I’m a licensed attorney babysitting inmates with no security; cleaning up epic amounts of paperwork bullshit because other people aren’t doing it; interviewing the entire jail once a week; going to court fairly often; AND trying to give all 29 Mods at least one hour in the law library per week.... all without over time and only getting paid $13 before taxes! And you’re telling me… that I am too expensive… and must make a daily accounting to you? Fuck off, you pencil pushing asshole. If the Labor Budget is too costly… instead of targeting the licensed attorney trying to do 80 hours of work in 40 hours for $13… how about looking at your own $168,000 salary? Because what I’m expected to do… required by law. What you’re required to do? Seems kind of bloated.
