Nabokov

Joyce

The James Joyce one is suitably confusing. It has what I believe to be Russian subtitles and a lot of it is in to me heavily accented English. So… I saw that it had closed captions. The closed captions are very bad. They are so confusing they are Joycean.

General update in life -

Since last we met,

  • I’ve gotten used to ads in my internet. Funny how adaptable we are. No ads - good. Ads - good.

  • I’ve given up 750 words. Turns out that’s easy to do too. I wonder if I’ve gotten too easy. Too accustomed to change. Yes. No. Either is ok. I can take you up. I can put you down. Whatever.

  • Kids are home this weekend. Deb’s friend had a concert in LaCrosse Friday night. The family showed up mid Saturday morning.

  • Male family members are putting new windows in Joana’s house. The gas furnace was put in a week or so ago. She now has a thermostat. First thermostat in the family since the one in our trailer and the one in my dad’s trailer. (City kids have one obviously.)

  • I’m reading John M. Del Vecchio’s The Thirteenth Valley. A novel of the Vietnam war. Philip Caputo’s Rumors of War was earlier with the Marines in the south. Del Vecchio writes about the Army 101 Airborne north of Danang, south of Hue in 1970. War is an incredible waste. In all ways possible. So much damage inflicted. So much cost in dollars, pain, fear, and lost hope. And to be the country where the war happens.... we cannot imagine.

  • I’ve been having trouble with time lately. I was a week early for the Dem event a couple weeks ago. And I was an hour early for work Friday. I was supposed to be there at 4am instead of 5 am. So I set my new alarm clock an hour ahead - both the time and the alarm. The result was it went off at 2:30 but it was really only 1:30. So I sat in the empty parking lot and drank coffee and listened to the radio. I ran the car motor every so often to charge the battery and run the heater.

  • I got the car’s lights’ dimmer switch replaced last week. I left the Buick at a repair place in Luana and drove a loaner. The loaner was Decorah’s old police car. I felt like the Blues Brothers. Cop tires, cop suspension. I noted the Impala’s seat belt was incredibly worn where the belt goes through the slidey thing at the door. Lots of ins and outs for a cop car, no doubt. The guy who replaced the light switch told me he found some loose wires under the hood and fastened them up and now I do not have as many warning lights lit on the dash. That’s good, not bad.

  • Talking heater and furnace, we are still having pretty warm fall/early winter weather. We had some really stiff winds blow through at the end of the week but they didn’t really bring much change. There was rain sometime too but that’s ok. Crops are harvested. Calves aren’t weaned yet.

  • I’ve started a few fires. We have half a semi-load of slab wood from Root River Hardwoods.. That stuff burns really well. It’s up at Joana’s. I suppose I could stop with the Buick and fill the trunk. Hey, that sounds like fun. The two ancient oaks that fell into the cornfield last June have a lot of firewood in them and it’s handy but it’s still wet. Needs to be cut up and split so it can dry out a bit before it will burn.

  • The Old Man River is for sale for 2.5 million dollars. That’s the place where I had to bring my own waitress and then later my own food. New owners will modify some changes… hopefully.

  • yahoo told me this morning that Hillary had some rough spots in her debate last night. I guess I’ll wait and see what the New Yorker has to say about it. I’ve been very successful at saying no to all comers, politically. I hope to remain above the fray. If you have any reason to call me, please leave a message because I am not answering unidentified calls.

  • This list does not seem to be coming to an end. I’m thinking I should show you a picture or two. Let’s see what I’ve got.

Last Sunday Christmas lights were going up in Riverside Park.
