Day Five: What are your favorite comfort foods?

My most favorite food all around is Mexican food. Only not just Mexican food. It has to be Tex-Mex. I grew up in the hill country of Texas where there were only Mexicans and whites. It was where ranchers had huge ranches (miles and miles of land) where they lived all of the time but their children and wives had houses in town so the kids could go to school. All of the ranchers had Mexicans working for them. So Mexican food was everywhere. Plus my mother made Mexican food all of the time and so when I settle down to a meal of tacos and enchiladas, I feel my childhood all over, again.

But then there are my comfort foods from my grandmother. My grandmother was an excellent cook. She would cook a huge Sunday meal where we would all eat together when I lived in the same town as her. Chicken and dumplings is a comfort dish for me because she made the best! Also, hot cereal is a comfort food. When I spend the night with her she always made me hot cereal. And it was smooth and warm and sweet. My poor mom tried to make hot cereal but it was always lumpy and too hot and she never got it sweet enough. So, yeah, rightly made hot cereal is a comfort food for me.
