Regret? in A small but passable life.

Yeah, I’m regretting not going for the thru-hike now. Every morning I take my first cup of coffee and go out to the front porch with Liam Dog I think what a great morning in the woods it’d be. Oh well.

I finished reading Paul Theroux’s “Deep South”. It was an exceptionally good book, like all his books. Instead of traveling overseas and getting off the beaten path he chose the Deep South here in the US. The “end” of this circular four season trip, the Westernmost point, he chose Northwest Arkansas, which I believe was accurate. Just a couple of hours south of here, the rural Arkansas just across the Missouri line is definitely third-world like. I remember driving around there while looking for wilderness off the beaten path and not having to look far.

He paints a bleak picture of the Deep South. Dying or dead towns. People living in extreme poverty and basically being ignored by the government and NGO’s. He compares places in Africa and Asia where he’d seen billions of dollars in aid going to countries and the Deep South where aid, if it comes is miniscule and misspent. A very bleak place.

Anyway, yesterday was another walk to the library to return the last two books and to pick up another and order two more. The reading continues.

I made a great dinner last night. Meatloaf, mashed tators, and French cut green beans. I had it ready when Jassy and Clayton returned from class. We all ate too much, for sure.

A fellow writer here on PB has bought himself a true country place. Beings how he’s never lived in the country before and the area he chose is known for wicked cold snowy winters I’m curious, downright fascinated, to see if he survives his first Winter out there. My idea of course was for him to buy an RV with his small pile of cash and head to warmer climes instead. But hey, to each his own, right? I wish him luck.

Out of all the people, maybe a half dozen, I started following on youtube last Spring that were thru-hiking the Appalachian Trail, only two made it to Katahdin. Both were young women.

and

Outstanding.

I wasn’t able to find anyone to follow on the Pacific Crest Trail. I think the forest fires may have prevented most people from hiking the trail this year. Maybe someone was able to make it but I couldn’t find them on youtube.

Yeah, that’s my life, following other people living their lives. I’m watching sailors, hikers, Rvers and van dwellers, truck drivers, and various other wanderers living what I’ve always wanted to live. I’m content though, unless I could find another habitable planet. I could go for that.

All I need right now is a library and grocery store within walking distance. Simple really. If I could find a patch of woods with those two criteria I’d be set.

I found this:

All I need is a patch of woods.

Anyway, I’ve got a book to read.
