ASL Show by SODA Tuesday, February 16, 2010

I went to my very first ASL (American Sign Language) activity the other day. It was a variety show. It was put on by my college by the SODA group. (Signers and Other for Deaf Awareness.)

I am taking SIGN160 in school. This is a class that teaches very basic ASL but mostly teaches about the Deaf culture. For the class, I am required to attend different Deaf culture events. I decided my first one would be the SODA's Star Search show.

I was very nervous. I had no idea what to expect. When I sat down the people in front of me had a mother and her two children. The mother turned around and smiled at me. I immediately felt welcome. Then she said something to me in sign language. I had no idea what it was and got very embarrassed. I wish I knew how to say something that would let her know I didn't know ASL. However, I think she figured it out when I didn't reply.

The show was absolutely amazing! People from the more advanced ASL classes performed, along with interpreters, professors, and other people from the Deaf community. As the music played the performers danced and signed the words. It made ASL come to life! The performers danced to songs like, YMCA, White and Nerdy, and Bye bye bye. They mixed music with comedy. It was not only entertaining, but really helped with learning new signs.

Other than that, life has been pretty good lately. School is going good. Lily is learning a lot and growing like a weed.

That's all.
