It looks like Nathan is going to be joining a side business with a good family friend of his. This man is his parents age and works a steady job but has been cultivating this side business where he fixedcomputers, runs sound at events, and does other technology related jobs for businesses and individuals. It has grown to the point where he can’t do it on his own and so he thought of Nathan as an obvious choice.
This guy made it quite clear they would be equal partners in the business. And that he would teach Nathan everything he knows about the business side of things. All the stuff with the books and taxes etc etc. And he basically said once they both decide they’re ready the business will be Nathan’s to run.
Talk about a huge answer to prayer. I have been telling Nathan for TWO YEARS there was a need for this kind of a business in our town. We live in the type of town where most people would rather hire locally than contract to huge companies. Plus there is a town full of little grannies who need help with things like setting up printers, running email services, getting websites up and running. And Nathan is personable enough to really make this work. Lots of IT guys are rude and/or don’t know how to talk to people but not my Nathan. The only thing holding him back from starting something like this was the fact that he doesn’t really have the know how to start a business. So here it is being handed to him!
It would just be a side business for now. Maybe for a long while. But it will be a few hundred dollars more a month starting out and as they grow it’ll be more and more. The job he has now is really supportive of him and he thinks they’ll understand if he needs to start cutting back hours there eventually.
I’m so excited for him. It isn’t the opportunity we thought would be coming. It isn’t a 9-5 with a steady paycheck and benefits. But it is an opportunity worth taking. And we have nothing to lose at this point. If nothing else it will be a great learning experience and he will be able to do something fulfilling and challenging. I have so much faith in him.
Ill update when I know more. Til then I’m just going to smile and dream about the future :)
