Strop, Jamming and Charlie in Diary

I had a talk with Jay about what happened at the weekend and he said he didn’t realise that I had booked the hotel as a treat for him, he decided not to go because he would have been in a massive grump and spoiled my weekend. Well he spoiled my weekend by not coming at all, but that’s in the past now and there’s nothing we can do about it. He’s promised to come and watch my next two games on 12th and 19th September, but they’re not stopovers, they’re just day trips. So I won’t lose anything if he has another strop and decides not to come.

So, my game. It was my first time playing against another team and I was really nervous, but I had a great time. Some of them have been playing for years and are very talented and intimidating but I think I did ok. I even scored some points! And I knocked some people off the track!

I also carried out a sneaky move. When you’re jamming, you wear a cover on your helmet with a star on it. You also have a member of the team called a pivot, who has a stripe on their helmet cover. If you’re jamming and you’re struggling to get past the blockers, you can remove the star helmet cover and pass it to the pivot, and they then take over the jammer role. Well I was struggling to get past the blockers so my pivot shouted at me to pass her the star. I took it off my helmet, all the blockers saw what I was doing and immediately went and blocked the pivot, leaving me free. But I had still had the star in my hand, so I shot past as fast as I could and got the star back on my helmet. That whole paragraph was probably really boring for everyone but, mwahahaha, playing a sneaky trick, I was quite proud of that :o)

All the Liverpool girls were really friendly and welcoming. It’s great, you spend a couple of hours knocking seven bells out of each other, and then you all have a big sweaty hug and compliment each others’ game. This is my very first team photo at the end of the game (I’m 6th from the left in a purple helmet). I hope there’ll be many more!

In other news, we have a visitor! A few days ago a budgie started coming into our garden. We don’t get wild budgies in the UK so it was obviously an escaped pet. I set up a trap for it, the old Box with a Stick and Piece of String routine, with some seed to tempt it in.

I didn’t see the budgie after I set it up but I left Jay with it while I was at work. He tried to catch it for a few days with no luck. Yesterday afternoon I saw it for the first time in a while. It went under the box to eat the seeds, I pulled the string and lo! I caught a budgie! First time and all after Jay tried for ages, hahaha!

So here we have our new visitor, me and Sonja think it’s a boy, and he’s still a baby because of the bars across his face. I looked at him today and I think his name is Charlie. He seems healthy, happy and friendly and sits on my finger with no hesitation. I’m going to try and find his owner but I secretly hope I can get to keep him; he can keep my zebra finch company!
