On Friday we drove up to my hometown of Shrewsbury for our annual visit to the flower show there. I always get quite emotional when I visit. Although we left over 50 years ago when I was in my early teens, it still feels like home to me. The show is much more than a flower show. As well as the 3 marquees of flower stands and floral art, there is a craft tent, trade stands and a big arena with entertainment all day from horse jumping and falconry in the afternoon to well known performers in the early evening followed by a fantastic firework display.
My favourite flower stand
In the middle of The Quarry Park where the show is held is The Dingle which was the original quarry and is now a beautiful area with flower beds and a lake.
This is the statue of Sabrina, godess of the river Severn.
I took part of my diary name from her because I grew up near that river.
After a couple of hours enjoying the flower marquees, The Dingle and the various trade stands we went over to the arena to watch Ancora, a really good group of 4 singers who performed mainly classical songs and numbers from musicals like Les Miserables. They were great and were followed by the finale of brass bands and a male voice choir and the fireworks.
Although Shrewsbury is only 60 miles away we stay overnight nowadays as driving home after the fireworks at eleven at night is too tiring, that’s old age creeping on! It also means that we can spend most of the following day in Shropshire which is great as I usually only get to visit once a year.
