Hello any Readers left!I am absolutely shocking at keeping up with prosebox, I have to say that I will think of any excuse to NOT write and I have sort of worked out why!I cannot imagine that anyone could even be interested in my small life.Anyway, before you all give up entirely,I pledged with myself that I would write today.Saturday mornings are pretty ideal for me.I have a complete change of day, just to mark it.Of course,I still walk my beloved Taitai early. This morning I didn’t wake ‘til 5.20am and it was raining!Aar–gh!Neither Taitai nor I enjoy walking in the rain!owever, by the time I had had my breakfast ,the rain, mercifully, had stopped! This seems to havee been the pattern all winter.Between 6am and 7am all the rain dissappears!Consequently Taitai and I can just about get around the traps and home before anything too dramatic happens.Only once this winter has this NOT applied and Taitai decided that after we had crossed the road that he would do his business on the grass verge and we then went home!Even then weboth got soaked.Ha ha!Actually there is a meteorological explanation. This quiet weather hour is called the diurnal effect.Happens just before dawn.I learnt of this amazing fact when I was sailing with my late husband. He always started a long trip before dawn.It is nearly 10 years since his death and I feel I have proven this theory. What is lovely now as Spring aproaches, is that the dawn is much earlier and Taitai and I are now walking home in near daylight.
Imagine my delight when this morning,on the uphill climb home I smelled something beautiful! On checking with my torch I found jasmine, tangeled in the honeysuckle hedgeon the boardwalk!Just out of reach!I tied and tried to reach it,but no,not this morning. Those tiny white flowers will appear more and more now, bearing their heady perfume!
Tomorrow, if it is fine,I will take the slightly different route and check for freesias.I have avoided this alternative route most of the winter as it got so muddy.I adore Spring. It leads to Summer of course, however, it is also a time of rebirth.Birds, animals, trees ,plants and even people, feel rejuvenated.Okay, any readers overseas and even in the Sth Island of NZ have more marked season change, however, even here,in a temperate climate, we see marvellous change.
It has been a cold, wet winter, and one with quite a few frosts, the temperature dropping down to -3 degrees on a number of occasions, which believe me is COLD for here on Waiheke Island .I love the fine days after frosts, however, my body doesn’t!Everything aches and my poor arthritic toes react badly. They are quite misshaen now and detest shoes!and in in Winter,in a frost, bare feet aren’t an option.I take very good care of them, binding them so that they don’t rub against shoes. Not pretty feet at all! However, they are the only ones I have and if I want to keep walking,I have to take special care.Same with my back.I have 3 collapsed discs, caused through years of being a farmers wife, a full WORKING farmers wife which means lifting and throwing hay bales and wet sheep and all sorts of other things.I was due to have a back operation nearly 4 years ago, however, decided I didn’t want surgery until and if I had to, so have keptt walking.Uhill coming home,I have to stop and stretch back and forth as the sciatic nerve gets trapped!I am now in my seventies and don’t intend to have surgery that means I can’t walk my dog and keep my fitness up.Ah well, enough of that!
All the grandies and my daughters have had bad colds and ‘flu this winter.I have a ‘flu vaccination every year and so far,so good.Could be the walking helps there too!
Other changes are of course,Polly shifting house. The emotional, physical and mental challenges caannot be understated here on our Island. The rents have risen hugely as we are part of greater Auckland City and house prices and rents have risen with availabel housing.Polly is one of the most determined women I have ever met! AND she knows exactly what sort of house she wants and needs!I have to admit I am NOT the same.My late husband used to say I would be happy living in a cave as long as it was warm and dry! So,what I would be happy with and what Polz would be happy with are two entirely different things.I’d go for low rent and small. The only thing I am fussy with is I don’t like living under someone elses house.I have only done it once, and owing to hearing the upstairs people using the toilet and intimacy sounds, would never do it again!
So finding dear Polz her house was difficult for her and us.I constantly said the wrong thing at the wrong time,so that wasn’t great! It had to be a ‘Polly’ house.Eventually ,quite by chance,Penny and I found the ideal house. The only problem was, the rent was really high. However, I told Polly about it as it had just been advertised.I had been in the house some years ago and so had Polz.Yep, she loved it!So arranged a viewing, loved it even more and took it! Oh gosh!It is just perfect, and has a lovely seaview and 2 bedrooms and is full of light and close to everything!I questioned how she would pay the high rental and got the curt reply that she would do it somehow. And she has!Phew!I won’t go into details, not my place, however, went with her to WINZ as she got upset the first time by the caseworker she thought was an Auckland import,She isn’t.She is my daughters caseworker and very thorough and she also thought Polly couldn’t afford it!Not my dearest friend!!Wherre there is a will there is a way!I have to admit I am in awe of her talents with beaurocracy. She had worked out her budget, paid a deposit, had the tenancy details and the amount she would have left, worked out!Brilliant!Beats me hands down! And I am really ,really happy for her!And I admire her tenacity and persistence and love her to bits.Well done my dear friend! All thse years of being a solo Mum have paid off in experience>So,just moving day now and the community and Penny and I will help as much as we can.
Anyway,so changes are on the way.Oh I forgot to mention ,the new home is much closer to where I live which is great!Hope Polz thinks that too.We have had quite a few deaths of friends this winter too which is always very sad, especially when one of them was the 47 yr old wife of one of Penny and her exhubby’s very close friends. She rapidly developed a very agressive leukemia and died in hospital of an aneurysm 3 weeks later I knew them very well and we were all gobsmacked with shock.Dear Kate was a real live wire and the suddenness was a terrible thing.I had never seen enny’s ex Chris cry before at the loss of this wonderful friend wife and mother and grandmother.I get along fine with Chris now and gave him a big hug and kiss and was shocked by his grief.I detest going to funerals, however have been to 6 this winter.Kates was huge. And so sad.
It has also been a winter oof escaping horses! They have had to be recaptured 4 times!Luckily they are very good! And changes in the demographic of the Island have somehow spawned a new group of people who want Waiheke to break away from Auckland City.I am sitting firmly on the fence over this! Not rushing things!
The world is a bit of a mess as usual.I am now in my seventies and tend not to worry too much about it.I follow news eagerly and have my opinions. Can’t take aggressive contention nowadays though so leave it to the younger generation whose lives it will affect.
Well is that enough news for you?I am fine and just enjoying my small life.It is raining and gray outside and a little chilly,so reading is on the agenda todaynow that I have done and entry!!!I welcome Spring with open arms!I have my Church people and my Toastmaster people and Gods in his Heaven, tho I’m not sure about all being right in the world!!Its about the same as it always was!!Be kind to each other and be happy and best love to my dear Polz!
Lots of love,
