Lily's father called the other day. We had a nice chat. It was surprisingly pleasant. Not that we don't get along, but something happened that I never expected to.

We were talking about Lily and I just felt the time was right to ask him about her. So I did. I simply asked, "So are you ready to meet her yet?" And he gave an answer I wasn't expecting. He said, "I have been thinking about coming to meet her."

I am thrilled. I want her to be able to meet her father. This is a huge step for him. He has never shown any kind of need to see her. He has always been very firm on his feelings of not ever meeting her. So this is huge. I explained that I don't want to pressure him into anything and that I would be willing to take her to him or he could come here or we could even meet half way. Then I just said, "All you have to do is tell me when you are ready and we can make it happen."

Then he explained how nervous he was. He explained he feels that he's not very good with children. He said that he's scared. I tried very hard to make him feel that it was alright and she's a very happy baby. Then I asked him if he ever sucked his thumb. He said, "yes." So I told him that no one in my family has ever sucked their thumb and Lily has sucked her thumb since the day she was born. He said that he did too. Then he said, "that's wild," in almost a whisper to himself. Even though we were on the phone, I could just "feel" him thinking deeply about her.

I could just tell he's been doing a lot of thinking about Lily. I never thought it would happen. I didn't think that there was a chance. I had pretty much written the whole thought off.

I really hope that it happens.

wow, this is huge! i'm glad the both of you are so mature about the whole situation and i'm glad that he wants to meet her.
