This is Sam back in October. He looks like any normal 2 year old, happy and healthy, excited about his baby sister being born in a few months.
He wasn’t healthy, though. He was having stomach issues that were worrying the family and led to a doctor/ER visit which sent them running to St. Jude’s where he was diagnosed with Stage 4 Neuroblastoma high risk. He’s had two huge tumors removed in risky surgery. He has had multiple treatments and is now going through radiation. It’s gotten scary. His mom’s post today:
Today feels a lot like November. The unknown is the scariest part about life. As you know, Sam has had issues maintaining his oxygen levels. After sedation today, he was still having trouble, so anesthesia and clinic doctors began talking. As they were coming up with a plan, the radiology oncologist came by the recovery room to see us. All together the plan that has been come up with is that we will be admitted, continue radiation, wait on results from tests they ran today for viral infections, and rule out any of those, and then, we face something we don’t want to face. There is a possibility that Sam has a lung disease as a side effect from a chemo he received in transplant. We talked with the doctors today and agreed that if the disease was our outcome then we would have to talk about quality of life at that point. To say the least, it has been a long, hard, tear-filled day. We are still waiting on our room on the second floor for our indefinite stay. Pray for Sam’s lungs to miraculously heal, and pray for us as we feel alone, tired, and fearful.
So, please send whatever you can their way, prayers, healing thoughts, well wishes, etc. They are in need of them all. I can’t even begin to fathom how they can face even thought of dealing with “quality of life”.
This is a much more recent picture of Sam.
