Colic Friday, November 14, 2008

So my little Lily is suffering from colic. I heard one helpful thing to do is cut out dairy from my diet. However, I have tried figuring out what has milk and what doesn't. Well, it seems to me that everything has milk. So I have no idea what to do.

Lily cries and screams for hours at a time. Three hours to 16 hours straight. It's horrible on me. I can't sleep with out her waking up and crying. The longest she will sleep is 2 hours. Most nights I get 2 to 4 hours sleep in a 24 hour period. My little girl cries and cries and nothing I do sooths her. It's terribly frustrating and sometimes I have to leave the room to just cry from exhaustion and frustration. I don't want her to be in pain so I want to help her.

It's so hard to watch her lift her legs up to her chest, cry, and squirm in what seems to be gas pains. I just want to help her! I give her drops for colic but they don't really help. Anyone know anything I can do? Anyone know what foods are non dairy? (besides water and oranges)

Colic last 3 months. This means the 3 months I have off from work will be spent with a colicy baby. Then when I go back to work, she'll be getting better. That really saddens me. I want quality time while I am off work. I wish I could be a stay at home mom. I really do.

Anyway, she is exactly 4 weeks old already. In 2 days she'll be one month old already. Time is flying by.

i think they have dissolvable tablets for colic too. as well as gripe water. i had to give my oldest the drops before i fed her AND after, and that seemed to do the trick. try bicycling her legs too, that should help move the gas around. and baby belly massage works well too. When Jimmy was colicy I gave him gas drops or gripe water. It's been a long time for me so sorry I can't be much help. [prettylittlekitty] 11/14/2008 9:32:56 PM
try making sure to swaddle her a lot. the legs to chest helps it a lot. i have had doctors also suggest putting dr pepper on your fingertip and letting them suck it off. just enough to help them burp so that the bubbles dont get stuck in their belly.waking every 2 hours is pretty common though. you might also try adding a tiny bit of rice cereal to some milk in a bottle. it will help her sleep better and little bit of solid will help with the air in her tummy.

as odd as it sounds...if you have a vibrator rub it on her lower back. the sound and feel usually helps. [muted exposure] [p] 11/14/2008 9:57:45 PM
when david was a baby i believe we gave him humphrey's #3. i remember dissolving the pellets but i don't remember if it was because of the colic or if it was for teething or if it was for both. i do remember gently massaging his belly, though. good luck, lovely. hopefully she pulls out of it quickly.

I take it you aren't breast feeding?

When Katie was little we had a special non-dairy formula for her. It wasn't the Soy stuff either. I can't for the life of me remember what it was called, just that it was quite a bit more expensive than the normal stuff.

I was never able to find anything that really helped. She'd sleep for 2 hours maximum and then want to be fed or just cry. The first month of her life I slept sitting up in the rocking chair more often than I slept in the bed.

After about a month she calmed down quite a bit and things got easier.

Hang in there hon!

I've heard colic is tough...hang in there Momma! [Mommy2Katie] 11/15/2008 4:01:24 AM
You can change her formula to a soy based formula or a gentle formula.... that's if you aren't breast feeding. Otherwise, make sure your swaddling her up tight, that helps too. Call your doctor too, they may have other ideas.

Warm baths help too.. it's like being back in the womb and comforts them.

It will get better. :) [Ark's Dream] 11/15/2008 9:59:47 AM

I am lactose intolerant so I pretty much keep away from milk, cheese icecream etc. Chocolate can sometimes have the same effect as milk as well. You should be fine if you eat things like bread, pasta, meat, chicken, potatoes, veges etc. For some reason yoghurt doesn't effect me as other dairy products but I would check with your doctor before eating it if you are supposed to be avoiding dairy.
