This photo by Chris Hondros was taken in Tal Afar (Iraq) in 2005. The child’s name is Rakan Hassan, US Troops had shortly before opened fire on his family as they did not stop for a checkpoint, killing both parents and paralysing one of the five children on board.
Simply due to press interest Rakan was flown to the US for treatment (unlike countless others) and was murdered shortly after returning to Iraq in a Bombing.
”Almost every soldier in Iraq has been involved in some sort of incident like that or another, I would say. Their attitude about it was grim, but it wasn’t the end of their world. It was, “Well, kind of wished they’d stopped. We fired warning shots. Damn, I don’t know why the hell they didn’t stop. What’re you doing later, you want to play Nintendo? Okay.” Just a day’s work for them. That stuff happens in Iraq a lot.”

Hondros was killed while documenting events in Libya on April the 20th in 2011.
This is war, This is our silence, This is our inaction.
