Busy. in A small but passable life.

Wednesday’s entry:

I finished reading “I Am Radar” by Reif Larsen. A nice little novel. Liam Dog and I walked to the library on the square to return the book. I had picked him up and carried him inside. I dropped the book in the slot and walked over to the “Hold” shelf. I had just grabbed the next book waiting for me, leaving the one after that, when the librarian walked up to me and asked if Liam were a service dog. I said “No he isn’t” and handed her the book and my key fob library card. I took Liam outside and waited until she had brought me everything back, outside. When she did that I told her that there was no hitching posts for canines outside. I didn’t tell her that she had broke a federal law by asking me about Liam. (And no, if he were a service dog he wouldn’t be required to wear a vest.)

Anyway, I had another book and it was a good walk.

On the most coolest nice news front — Jassy has found her a house. She found it and she rented it. The utilities be on on Friday. They have already paid June rent here, but that just means we have thirty days to unload this apartment.

The house is a great older house just a couple of blocks from here. It is south-facing to the street with an actual sidewalk. It has a big back yard with huge trees. It has three bedrooms, one downstairs and two upstairs. I has a laundry room and a pantry in a mudroom just inside the backdoor. It also has a front porch as long as the house is wide. Overall this house has more points (5.5) on our point system than any other we’ve looked at.

I’ve been going over to the campus library every evening from about 4pm until 6pm. Those are the hours until June 7th. It’s just not enough time to do everything I NEED to do, including keeping up with everyone here. I’ll get caught up, eventually.

So yeah, toting crap over to the new house may not leave much room for reading or dinking on the laptop.

Things could always be worse. Always.

Friday’s entry:

Yesterday I finished reading “Radical Abundance” by K. Eric Drexler. APM. Atomically Precise Manufacturing. (Nanotechnology) I’d like to live long enough to see if it comes to fruition. Money would become worthless as all products would cost nothing. Everything would be plentiful and free. It would be a reboot of civilization. Call it Civilization 2.0.

Well, that’s it. Last night was my last night sleeping in the van. And it was a good sleep. I slept in until 8am. A nice finale to six years of sleeping in the van.

This morning I loaded up my belongings that were in the apartment. And no, the ‘Two boxes, two bags’ plan is still not accomplished. I still have way too much crap.

I hadn’t seen the inside of the house yet. Jassy took me on a tour. The two rooms upstairs are much bigger than I’d imagined. We decided which one would be mine. It has a little south facing window in a little dormer facing the street. There are bigger windows in the east facing wall. The view out those are a solid wall of green as there are huge trees about twenty feet away all down the property line. It reminds me of the view we had out of the apartment windows. So, you wind up the stairs, go through the “craft” room with it’s west facing window and on into my room. There is a storage space under the eaves accessible from this room. It even has a light in there. That’s where I’ll stow my gear and belongings when I’m not living here. (Yes, there are plans.) And Jassy wants to shelve most of the books in here. No problem. There’s plenty of room. It will be a library/guest room when I’m not in residence.

Anyway, I schlepped up all my belongings, took a long hot shower, and then took my new porch chair I’d found by the dumpster this morning out to the front porch, and opened up the book I’d picked up yesterday. I’ve got three more books to pick up. One on the 9th. One on the 10th. And one on the 12th. I knew I shouldn’t have ordered up EIGHT books. Damn.

Jassy and Clayton and Liam Dog showed up this evening with boxes of dry goods. And some kitchen odds and ends. And the coffee maker! With the coffee fixins’. Nice. I’m thinking coffee and a book on the front porch in the morning. Hells yeah!

I love this neighborhood. I’ve always loved this neighborhood. I’ve lived in this neighborhood for sixteen years. Two blocks south of the old Route 66. Old houses. Old trees. Old sidewalks. No thru traffic. Remember George’s Steakhouse? It’s just down at the end of the street.

A funky house on a funky street, for these funky times.

Wednesday’s entry:

All the way back around to Wednesday.

I’ve been busy. I got the shelf liners stuck down in the kitchen cabinets. I started clearing out the massive grapevine in the backyard. It had taken over a lot of space.

I finished reading “The Invisible History of the Human Race” by Christine Kenneally.

I picked up three more books from the library and read half of the first one today.

I’m still trying to adapt to my attic room. I’ve got the temperature under control. The animals have learned that it is a quiet place to hang out, but mostly sleep. For some strange reason Liam Dog slept with me for the first few nights when he moved over permanently.

The house is a tad bit closer to the campus. That’s where I’m at right now. I’m the only one sitting here in the student union at 8:16pm.

I’m getting in the bad habit of sleeping late in the mornings, after listening to music on my headphones until midnight.

My attic room has a cubby off to the side under the eave. It even has a light. I realized the other day that it is larger than my solo tent I lived in out in the woods for the month of March. The house handyman came by the other day and he mentioned that he plans to carpet both cubbies. So that got me to thinking, if I could somehow pipe in some A/C and heat that would be the perfect habitat for me.

Anyway, I’ll post this and see if I can watch the latest episode of “Game of Thrones”
