go praise yourself in poetry

Jesus probably knew the sad fact
that people were going to wage war in His name
but all the terrible music probably shocks Him.
The Crusades, sure, the writing was on the wall
but the iconoclastic failure that was Creed?
The American Gulf Wars go without saying
but could even He have predicted
how terrible Amy Grant would be?

I’m not saying terrible music was worse
than wars bordering on genocide of course
but I am saying
they would’ve been a lot harder to call.
Religion as an excuse
for wars of conquest were the order of the day
two-thousand-or-so years ago
but Toby Keith was a horror unforeseen.
If the invasions that shaped Rome in His name
were a punch in the heart
Lee Greenwood must at least be
a strong knee is the spleen.

Didn’t the guy go through enough?
Isn’t crucifixion pretty rough?
It just adds insult to injury
this Christian rock and country stuff.
