Smurfing and stuff in One day at a time

My house is about 8 minutes drive from the CBD (at the weekend when there is no traffic). They point I am trying to make is that I don’t live in a little rural idle with a few sheep on the hill behind me. Riddle me this then, why do I only have mobile phone coverage in one corner of the house (and only if the sky is relatively clear) and WHY does the power go off every time there is a hint of a storm??. Yesterday at about 7.00am – poof no power. Thankfully I had showered and got my make up on, but not good – I had wet hair, and it was dark and cold. Then to add insult to injury I couldn’t get my car out of the garage – I couldn’t find a manual default for the automatic door (and it was pitch black out there).

Eventually I gave up, shoved a woolly hat on, and made my way down the hill to the bus-stop (I normally do catch the bus, but I take my car down to another stop so I get a seat). The worse was yet to come though – I had to walk back up the same hill on the way home, again in the pitch black, and freezing. Ok. Rant over.

I went to visit my Mum at her new facility over the weekend. It is nice, clean, and well staffed. She does have a view out over a paddock that has sheep in, which is kind of mesmerising. Health wise she seems quite good, but it is much more of a hospital than her last place, and very impersonal. I took the day off work on Friday and went up to visit and also to help a friend out waitressing at a charity function. We had worked together about 30 years ago (as waitresses), she now runs a catering business. We slipped easily back into our roles, unfortunately a little too well, as we did what we used to do as youngsters and finished up the leftover wine. Ugh. Saturday morning - Stonking hangover, visiting Mum again and some kid starts playing “Scotland the Brave” on the bagpipes in a room down the hall. Then I had to drive home (4 hours), that will teach me (maybe).

Off to eyebrows, dinner and movies with Dani tonight. It is her 50th birthday party on Saturday. R has something else on, so I am going solo. Yuck. It is an 80’s party. I have had all sorts of ideas, but finally settled on……..a Smurf. I like the idea of face painting, as for some reason I don’t feel so shy when I do that and the wig thing. The inner me (that is still 18) would love to go as Madonna, but I live in terror that there will be a skinny girl there as Madonna, and I don’t want to be the Madonna who let herself go. R may come along later, if he does he is planning on doing the trench coat, stereo thing (a la John Cussack, zawing). I really wanted to go as Devo, but I couldn’t find a hat, and the instructions for making one on line were beyond me.
