We wallowed in nostalgia last night. For two hours the BBC broadcast the live concert from London celebrating/commemorating VE Day in 1945. It reiterated, once again, the course of the 1939-1945 war in British terms - all the cliches were there - but slickly put together - it just seems amazing that 70 years on the popular myths of the UK in the war are still prominent - it was the ‘Finest Hour’ and it has been down hill since (in fact it was downhill after the 1914-18 War.
At least they did not have ‘There’ll always be an England’ in the light of the election results in Scotland.
Interesting to have contemporary singers doing the hits of the period - and doing it well - I was singing along - as, I guess, were a lot of other people.

Of course, there is another way of doing it - and that was in Russia - 16,000 troops in Red Square - and lots of weaponry - and reminding us that the Soviet Union took the brunt of the fighting in Europe - and they are still a major power

I think I am happier with the UK celebration - but just reminds us that our place in the world is by no means assured - even with four Trident submarines circling the planet with nuclear weapons.
There is a service today in Westminster Abbey - and then I hope they will do something for Victory over Japan Day in August - the war was not over in May 1945 - just in Europe.

And here is something that kept the pecker up in the war - the Jane cartoon in the Daily Mirror - she invariably lost her clothes - ah, they were innocent days!!

Not many peckers would be raised by that now!
