The Road So Far…

Sora, a young boy, is in search of his friends, Riku and Kairi, after his world was swallowed by darkness. He has been chosen by a mysterious weapon called the Keyblade to combat the Heartless, a group of beings without hearts seemingly being controlled by a group of evil led by Maleficent, an evil fairy. In Traverse Town, Sora met up with Donald and Goofy, a pair of subjects from Disney Castle who were in search of their missing king, Mickey. Mickey, also a keyblade wielder, set off to discover why worlds were blinking out of existence. With the gummi ship provided by Donald and Goofy, the trio set off in search of their missing friends. Their first stop was a strange, wonky world known as Wonderland. It was here that the trio met Alice, a girl who shone with a great inner light. Alice had been accused of attempting to steal the heart of the Queen of Hearts. Sora and company set off into the Lotus Forest to find evidence of Alice’s innocence. Even though the trio found what they were looking for, with the help of the Cheshire Cat’s cryptic clues, the Queen still ordered her card soldiers to attack them. In the midst of the battle, Alice was kidnapped by the Heartless. With her kidnappers at large, the trio set off to eliminate the Heartless threat in Wonderland. After facing down a giant Heartless known as the Trickmaster and defeating him, the group realized that Alice had been taken off world. As neither Mickey or Riku and Kairi could be found, the trio set off to their next stop: Olympus Coliseum. Here, the trio met Phil, a satyr who trained heroes and was in charge of the Games. Even though Sora and company proved they had some skill, Phil would not allow them to compete as they were not true heroes. The group gained entrance, however, after Hades, God of the Underworld, provided them with a hero’s pass so they could enter the Games. With the pass in hand, Phil had no choice but to let the trio compete. Sora, Donald, and Goofy fought through many waves of Heartless only to come face to face with a mysterious mercenary named Cloud, whom Hades had hired to defeat Sora and kill Hercules, Hades’ archnemesis. When Sora managed to defeat Cloud, Hades changed up the game and set Cerberus upon the Coliseum. Hercules showed up and managed to save Cloud from Cerberus while Sora and company fought and defeated the three-headed menace. Phil dubbed the group “junior heroes” and gave them full access to future Games. Sora spoke to Cloud outside the Coliseum and discovered that, he too, was looking for a missing friend and Hades had promised to help him. Sora challenged Cloud to a fight in the future, but Cloud passed with a smile on his face. As the crew left Olympus Coliseum, Hades blew up at his own failure before remembering that he had everything in place to destroy Hercules and Sora once and for all. Meanwhile, the trio discovered a new planet completely covered by jungle. After a brief fight broke out between Donald and Sora over whether or not they should check the planet for signs of their lost friends, the gummi ship crash landed. Sora landed by himself in a tree house high above the jungle canopy. There he was attacked by a crazed leopard named Sabor, but was saved by a wild jungle man, who identified himself as Tarzan. Tarzan told Sora that he knew where he friends were, albeit through grunts and gestures, and led him off into the jungle. A quick trip led them a camp, where Sora met Jane, a naturalist who was studying gorillas. Her guide, Clayton, showed up shortly after followed by Donald and Goofy, whom he had found out in the jungle. Sora and Donald merrily reunited until realizing they had been fighting, causing the ship to crash. After examining some slides, Jane posited that the gorillas may know where to find his friends. Tarzan agreed to bring Sora and crew to the gorillas. Upon meeting Kerchak, leader of the gorilla clan, however, the group was turned away as Kerchak was distracted by something off near the tree house. When the trio arrived there, they found Clayton taking aim at a young gorilla named Terk. Donald startled Clayton and kept his shot from hitting Terk as the gorillas ran back off into the jungle. Back at camp, Jane scolded Clayton and forbade him from going anywhere near the gorillas again. However, as the tent flap closed behind Clayton, the group heard a shot. They ran outside to find Clayton missing and Heartless now in the jungle. Sora and crew made their way through the jungle, saving the gorillas from the attacks of the Heartless. With no sign of Clayton, the group made their way back to the camp, but found Jane missing. Tarzan sensed that she had been taken somewhere close to the tree house. Arriving in an area within the canopy, the group found Jane and Terk imprisoned in a jungle cage. Defeating the Heartless guards and destroying the cage, Jane revealed that Clayton had captured them. The group ran back into the jungle to a cliffside area where Clayton and the Heartless had the gorillas cornered. However, Sora and crew arrived just in time and fought Clayton off, only to be attacked by a giant Heartless known as the Stealth Sneak. Though Clayton and Stealth Sneak presented a stiff challenge, the group came out victorious and was rewarded by the gorillas with access to their nesting grounds in a cave behind a nearby waterfall. In the cave, the group was disappointed to realize that Tarzan’s grunts were meant to indicate that as long as Sora, Donald, and Goofy kept their friends in their hearts, they would always be able to find them. Seeing the truth in this, Sora reacted as a keyhole appeared in one of the cave walls. The Keyblade reacted and shot out a beam of light, locking the keyhole and spitting out another gummi. With a new friend in Tarzan and a gummi in hand, the trio decided to make their way back to Traverse Town to see if Leon, another refugee from a lost world, could identify what this new gummi was…

Now…

The trio made their way back to Traverse Town and decided to stop off at Merlin’s place first as they had learned alot more magic since their last visit. Merlin helped the trio practice the use of their spells. After a short training session, the trio thanked Merlin for his help and made their way back through the cave and into the Third District. Back in the Third District, the trio encountered a new Heartless called an Air Soldier. These new threats soared above the battlefield, but posed little threat to the more powerful trio that faced them. With his new Jungle King keyblade in hand, Sora and crew mowed through the Heartless in this part of Traverse Town. Near the doorway to the First District, Sora and crew came upon a pipe with an exposed wire. Remembering his wire from earlier, Sora tested out his Thunder spell on it. The trio heard a chime coming from the Second District. Deciding to wait until later to investigate it, the trio made their way to the First District. In the First District, the trio found Yuffie, who told them that Leon could probably be found training in a cavern that was connected to the alleyway behind the Second District hotel. In the cafe nearby, Sora tested out his Blizzard spell on the four candles sitting on the table. Extinguishing the four candles caused another chime to sound out. Sora went to the previously locked chest in the corner and opened it to find a Defense Up item. The group made their way next to the Item Shop and bought a new shield for Goofy, as well as some more hi-potions. Back in the alleyway where Sora first appeared in Traverse Town, the trio found their first red trinity mark. Where the blue trinity mark activated with Trinity Jump, these new red marks activated Trinity Charge, allowing the group to break through certain barriers. The barrier in the alleyway opened to reveal an entrance into the Second District alleyway. The alleyway itself was blocked, but there was a nearby chest that contained three more dalmatian puppies. Twenty-four down, seventy-five to go. The group made their way back into the First District and decided to stop by the Accessory Shop. Inside, the group found Cid, who told them that some items from his shop had gone missing and that he was hearing weird noises. A nearby moggle revealed that a big tournament was being held somewhere. Gee, I wonder where we might know that might host a big tournament. Anyhow, with these stops made, the trio decided to make a trip to the Second District next.

In the Second District, Sora and company came up against two new Heartless: the Yellow Opera and the Green Requiem. The Yellow Opera was a spellcasting Heartless that attacked with Thunder spells and hurled themselves into the trio. The Green Requiem was also a spellcasting Heartless, focusing on Cure spells. It would hover high out of reach and absorb magic attacks until forced to come down low to cure their teammates. The trio fought these along with groups of other Heartless like the Blue Rhapsody and Large Body, but always managed to come out triumphant as they made their way through the Second District. One place the trio visited was the Gizmo Shop. Apparently, striking that wire in the Third District with Thunder provided power to the lifts in the Gizmo Shop. Inside the Gizmo Shop, the trio once again fought back wave after wave of Heartless, though as before, these provided little resistance. Though there were not any treasure chests on the shelves of the Shop, there were three buttons. When Sora had stepped on all three, a little chime rung out. Back on ground level, the trio found a clock that had stopped at 6:54. Examining the clock revealed two postcards. Guess we will have to mail those off and see what prizes we get this time. With the Gizmo Shop checked out, the group decided to stop by the home of the Dalmatians and check in to make sure the puppies they had found had made it home safely. Yeah, we want to believe that Donald’s magic wouldn’t screw up something THAT important, but…well…it IS Donald after all. Better be safe and check. Inside the house, the group found Pongo and Purdita in much better spirits. Some of their puppies had made it home at last! To thank the trio, Pongo pushed a small box toward their heroes. For finding so many puppies, the happy dalmatian couple rewarded the group with a couple of gummi pieces they had found. With their reward in hand (though finding the puppies home safe was reward enough), the trio set off toward the alleyway to find Leon, hoping he could make sense of the gummi pieces they had found. After a few short Heartless battles, the trio found the entrance to the cave, but it was blocked off. They were just about to turn back towards the First District to speak with Yuffie again. After all, ninjas are known to be tricksy. However, that was when Goofy spotted a red trinity mark beneath the knee-high water. The trio approached the mark and activated it, causing them to crash into the bars and knock them down! With the path cleared, the trio made their way into the cave.

Inside the cave, they found Leon practicing technique with his gunblade while Aerith stood back and watched. The trio approached Leon and told him about what they had seen on their adventures. Leon realized they had found a Keyhole and asked them about it. Sora told him that the Keyblade had locked the Keyhole automatically. Aerith breathed a sigh of relief as Leon told the trio that every single world had it’s own Keyhole. The Keyhole of the world is a pathway that leads to the heart of the world itself. Leon reasoned that Traverse Town must also have a Keyhole. Sora was confused and asked what they meant. Apparently there was a report written by a man named Ansem. In it, it was written that the Heartless attempt to enter each world’s Keyhole and corrupt the heart of the world with Darkness. If the heart of the world is corrupted, the world itself ceases to exist. The trio was stunned. Leon went on to explain that was why the Keyblade was so important. Apparently, locking the Keyhole of each world would protect the heart of the world and thus keep the world from blinking out of existence altogether. As Sora was the only Keyblade wielder around, he was the only one capable of protecting the worlds. Sora seemed doubtful that a kid like him would be trusted with such a monumental task. Leon sensed his doubt and told him that visiting other worlds would do him well. Goofy chimed in that they would also be able to search further for Riku, Kairi, and King Mickey. With that in his mind, Sora perked up and decided to continue his quest. It was then that Sora remembered the weird gummi pieces they had found in the Deep Jungle and Wonderland. Sora took them out and showed them to Leon. Leon seemed puzzled, so Aerith suggested that they go and visit Cid once more in the Accessory Shop. As the trio was getting ready to head out, Leon stopped them and asked them to take something with them. It was a small stone called the Earthshine. Leon could sense that the stone held some mysterious power, but he had been carrying it for luck. Sora asked how to use it, but Leon was once again unsure, so the group set off to speak to Cid. The trio decided to exit up a nearby staircase. Behind the doorway, they found a chest which held three more dalmatian puppies. Knowing that Donald’s magic indeed worked, the trio happily sent the three puppies back home. Twenty-seven down, seventy-two to go! At the top of the staircase, the group found a platform that raised them back into Merlin’s study. The trio made their way back out into the Third District, crossed back through the district and through the doorway back into the First District, making their way into Cid’s Accessory Shop.

As they entered, Cid noticed the gummi that Sora had ready to show him and his eyes lit up. Cid immediately recognized the gummi piece. Donald asked him what it was for and Cid couldn’t help but laugh. Cid jokingly chastised them for flying a gummi ship around and not being able to recognize a navigation gummi when they saw one. Sora and gang began to take offense, but Cid told them to take it easy. He had not realized they were just amateurs at interstellar travel. Cid explained that with the navigation gummi, they could travel to worlds they had not been able to access before. Cid offered to install the gummi in their ship, provided they do him a small favor. Cid had restored a book and was about to deliver it to the owner. The book had been pretty beat up and he hadn’t been able to restore it to it’s original glory, but had done a fine job nonetheless. Cid handed the book to the group and told them to deliver it to the house on the other side of the fire door in the Third District. Ah, Merlin’s house. Just then, a giant boom sounded throughout Traverse Town and the bell in the Second District began to ring. Cid told them to go check it out if they wanted, but to deliver the book first. When they were done, they could find him in the Empty House in the Third District. With the navigation gummi entrusted to Cid and the book to deliver, the trio set out once more. Back out in the First District, Sora mailed his two postcards to receive two more prizes. Some of the folks were murmuring about the noise. One even mentioned that an evil sorceress was in town somewhere. Gee, wonder who that could be?. In any case, the trio made their way back through the Third District to Merlin’s House. Inside the house, the trio gave the book to Merlin who asked if they knew what kind of book it was. Of course, scatterbrained as ever, Merlin admitted that he didn’t even know himself. In fact, the book wasn’t even his. He just found it in his bag one day. Apparently, the book held some great secret. However, there were pages missing. Merlin promised to put the book out so that the trio could look at it whenever they liked and asked them to thank Cid for the repair. It was then that Merlin noticed the Earthshine stone that Sora was carrying. He told Sora that he should ask the Fairy Godmother about the stone. After awakening her from inside her tiny carriage, the Fairy Godmother explained that the stone was actually a creature that lived in a world that was consumed by darkness. Apparently, if a being in a consumed world has a strong enough heart, they become a summon gem instead of vanishing along with their world. Sora asked if the being inside could regain himself, but the Fairy Godmother told him only his spirit could be brought forth from the gem. With a Bibbity Bobbity Boo, the Fairy Godmother gave Sora the power to access the spirit within the gem. The spell would require three active party members to give the spirit strength enough to escape the gem and the spell could only be used once in each encounter. The spirit would be able to remain in battle only until the magic used to summon them ran out. The Fairy Godmother also gave them hope, telling the trio that should the spirit’s home world be restored, they would automatically return there. With the explanation done, she tasked Sora with saving any of the spirits that they could find. Sora promised that he would. With the help of Jiminy Cricket, Sora learned that the spirit trapped within the Earthshine gem was named Simba, a lion king that hailed from the Pride Lands. Sora promised the spirit that he would find a way to return him home before turning to the book he had brought to Merlin. Inside the book, Sora was shrunk once more and stumbled across a world all it’s own! A light shown out and a small stick house appeared. Investigating the area revealed an empty meadow. Sora decided to take a closer look and was sucked into the world within the pages! In the meadow, Sora came across a small yellow bear in a red shirt sitting on a log. The bear was tapping his head. “Think, think, think, think,” said the bear. Sora approached the befuddled bear and asked him what was wrong. The bear told him nothing, he was just thinking. He was trying to figure out how to say goodbye to Pooh. Sora asked, “Pooh?” The bear answered, “Yes?” Sora realized then that the bear himself was Pooh. The bear introduced himself as Winnie the Pooh and asked Sora who he was. Sora introduced himself. Pooh then asked if Sora had come to say goodbye to Pooh too. Sora asked why he would do that since they had just met. Pooh explained that everyone had gone away. Pooh explained that he and the other inhabitant of this placed, which he called the Hundred Acre Wood, used to take walks together or play Pooh sticks…and Pooh would eat honey. But now, everybody else had disappeared....AND his favority honey tree too. He figured everyone must have gone away while he was napping and, who knew, maybe he would end up going away somewhere as well. But, how does one say goodbye to themselves, he wondered. I mean, I have always said how people in planes are instructed how to assume the “put your head between your knees and kiss your ass goodbye position, but somehow, I don’t think that is exactly what Pooh is talking about. Pooh’s tummy started getting rather rumbly, so he went off to try and find some honey while Sora sat puzzled. Sora, realizing there was nothing else he could do in this meadow, left and returned to the book. On the other side of the pages, there was a house with a strange sign over the door. Looking closer, Sora was sucked back into the pages of the book. Inside the book, he found a tree with a door. Above the door hung a sign that read, “Mr. Sanderz.” Weird. Walking through the door, Sora found Pooh sitting on the floor holding an empty honey pot. Pooh wished to himself that the Hunny Tree would make a visit so that he could eat his fill. Sora, perplexed about what a Hunny Tree could be, explore the tiny house. He opened a window to let some air in and opened a cupboard, where he found an elixir. With nothing left to do inside, Sora made his way back out the door and came face to face with an owl. The owl, named Owl of course, told Sora that to find out what happened next in the story, he would have to find the missing pages of the book. Sora promised to find the missing pages and removed himself back to the book where he found a sparkling icon that allowed him to return to his normal size outside of the book. With the quest for the summon gems and the missing pages of the book now on also, Sora and company removed themselves from Merlin’s house and headed toward the Empty House, which Merlin told them they should visit before doing anything else.

Back in the Third District, Sora and crew were quickly attacked by a small group of Heartless, but before they could strike, someone else dispatched their foes. Sora gazed up in shock. Standing before the group was none other than Riku himself! Riku asked Sora what was going on. Sora couldn’t believe his eyes. He approached Riku and grabbed at the corners of his mouth to make sure he was real. Riku brushed him off with a laugh and told Sora to cut it out. Sora couldn’t believe he wasn’t dreaming, but Riku told him that he hoped it wasn’t a dream since it took forever to find him. Sora smiled and began walking off with Riku before realizing that something was missing. Kairi! Sora asked Riku where Kairi was, but Riku had assumed that she was with Sora. Sora looked crestfallen, but Riku told him not to worry, as he was sure she had made it off the island too. In fact, he said, she was probably looking for them as they spoke. At least they were free and they would all be together again soon. As Riku spoke, a Heartless Shadow appeared and made to attack him from behind, but Sora intercepted it with his keyblade. Riku was stunned that Sora had obtained such a power. Sora explained that he had been looking for Riku and Kairi too, with the help of Donald and Goofy. Riku asked who they were and Donald was about to introduce them, but Sora cut him off, telling Riku how they had visited so many place and worlds looking for him. Riku was impressed that Sora had grown so much on his own. Goofy also told Riku that Sora was a Keyblade master (not entirely accurate, but more on that farther down the line in another game). Donald made a point of saying that nobody would have guessed that Sora would be a Keyblade wielder, which Sora took offense too. Riku asked, “So this is a Keyblade?” Riku raised his hand, holding the keyblade itself. He had disarmed Sora without Sora even noticing. Weird though. When Leon held the keyblade, you might remember, it returned immediately to Sora. Not so this time. Riku held the keyblade and jumped back from Sora as Sora leaped forward to try and reclaim his weapon. After Riku had taken a closer look at it and had his fun, he tossed it back to Sora. Sora asked Riku if he was coming with them, but Donald told Sora that Riku couldn’t come. As Donald and Sora argued about whether or not Riku could come along, Goofy looked up and exclaimed that Riku had disappeared! Sora blamed Donald for Riku running off, but then conceded that at least he was alright and that maybe they would find Kairi soon too. With Riku gone, the gang continued on to the Empty House to find Cid. Inside, the empty house had been transformed into a small place for Leon and company to stay. Upon approaching Cid, the grizzled pilot turned to the trio and asked if they had ever heard of Maleficent. The name didn’t ring a bell to Sora (though it should to you readers by now) and asked who she was. Cid explained that she was a with and Leon told them that she was the reason that Traverse Town was full of Heartless. Aerith said that Maleficent had been using the Heartless for years, and Leon revealed that her attacks were the reason that their home world had been lost. That had been nine years prior. Cid had managed to construct a gummi ship and had managed to save Leon, Aerith, and Yuffie also. Leon went on to tell them that the ruler of his world was a wise man named Ansem (Got it memorized? Hehe, sorry. It’s a small joke that will make sense in the future). Ansem had dedicated his life to studying the Heartless and his report should give the heroes an idea on how to get rid of the Heartless once and for all. The problem was, as Leon told them, that when their world was destroyed, the pages of the report were scattered. Cid figured that Maleficent would have most of the pages. So now we need to seal the Keyholes, destroy the Heartless, find the pages of Ansem’s report, find the summon gems, AND find the missing pages of the mysterious book in Merlin’s study? Jeez, this had turned into a regular collect-a-thon, as if tracking down a hundred dogs wasn’t enough. Oh well, more important issues await, such as Riku standing with Maleficent outside the Small House, spying on our heroes. Apparently, Maleficent has met Riku before and told him that Sora had forgotten all about him while Riku had been trying so hard to find him. Bullsh- umm, sorry. But you all know the deal. Maleficent continued to stroke Riku’s ego and told him to come with her and she would help him find what he was REALLY searching for. Back inside the house, Cid made sure that the trio had delivered the book for him before telling them that the navigation gummi had been installed and was all ready to go. He told the trio that if they managed to find another one, to just come see him again. He also had thrown in a warp gummi so they could jump immediately to worlds they had previously visited without having to fly through space. Cid told the trio that he was going back to his real job and if they wanted to know what that was, to go see him in the First District. Meanwhile, Aerith had been thinking about the bell in the Second District. Yuffie told the group that there was a legend about the bell. Aerith then pointed out that the bell was all boarded up, but Cid told the trio to go ring the bell three times and see if anything happened. Aerith promised that they would try to figure out what Maleficent was up to while Sora and company continued their quest. Before seeking out the bell, the trio decided to visit Cid back in the First District. Apparently, Cid had left the running of the Accessory Shop to another resident. What he really did was barter in gummi pieces. He gave the group a free gummi for coming to see him and offered to sell more to them should they ever desire. With all this new knowledge, the trio set off toward the bell.

Back in the Second District, the trio was attacked by more Heartless. Sora decided to try out his newfound summoning power. He cast the spell up into the air and a mighty lion emerged from the darkness and roared out from atop a rocky outcropping. Perhaps this is some sort of image projected from the power of the spirit. Simba leaped down onto the battlefield to aid Sora with the Heartless. Sora and Simba charged their combined attack and as Sora struck, Simba let out a mighty roar that felled many of the Heartless in one blow. Thanking Simba for his help, the spirit returned to the gemstone as Sora, Donald, and Goofy finished off the last of the Heartless. The trio made their way back through the Gizmo Shop and climbed the ladder nearby once more to the roof. The trio arrived to discover that the crates blocking the bell had been moved. On the boards that were left blocking the bell was a red trinity mark. The group charged and destroyed the boards, leaving the bell open to them. Inside the bell area was a rope. Upon pulling the rope once, the bell rung out. Down at ground level, in a fountain near the door between the First and Second Districts, a mural built into the wall spun to reveal a new picture. Intrigued, Sora pulled the rope once more. Again, the mural spun around to reveal another new picture. Sora recalled the advice Cid had given him about the legend of the bell and pulled the rope one final time. The mural spun once more and water spouts shot up into the air, revealing the location of the Traverse Town Keyhole. Sora and crew rejoiced and leaped down from the bell tower roof to lock the Keyhole once and for all. As the trio approached the Keyhole and stood ready to lock it, a giant Heartless dropped out of the sky. It looked exactly like the Guard Armor Heartless they had faced when they first met in the Third District. The trio was much stronger than in their last meeting, however, and felled the mighty foe once more…or so it seemed. As Sora turned away to lock the Keyhole, the pile of armor picked itself up and flipped it’s pieces around. It’s hands became clawed feet. It’s boots became hammer-like hands. It’s torso flipped upside down and it’s head came to rest on top, dropping it’s face mask to reveal nothing but two yellow eyes shining out of the darkness that was it’s face. In short, it became known as Opposite Armor. Sorry, I know it isn’t the catchiest, most original name, but I can only give ya what the game gives me. This new armored foe was faster, more powerful, and could cast magic, unlike it’s other form. Sora called forth Simba once more to even the playing field. Simba helped wear down the mighty foe before his magic ran out and he returned to the gem. Meanwhile, Sora and crew renewed their attack on Opposite Armor’s limbs as they had in their previous battle. Sora made use of his new Cure spell to keep his health up and used a new attack, Stun Impact to weaken the limbs further. All it took was a few more strikes from Sora’s keyblade and Goofy’s shield to destroy the two lower limbs. Weakend, the Opposite Armor began firing cannon-like light blasts from the bottom of his torso. However, Sora attacked with vigor and, after a particularly brutal air combo, destroyed the Opposite Armor’s arms. With it’s strength significantly depleted, it wasn’t long before the rest of the Opposite Armor fell to the strength of the Keyblade wielder and his companions. The Opposite Armor faded into nothingness as a giant heart was released back into the world. With the battle won, Sora was rewarded by learning the power of wind, the Aero spell. With more strength surging through his body than ever before, Sora approached the Keyhole. He raised the Keyblade and a beam of light shot forth, locking away the Heart of Traverse Town. Doing so released yet another gummi piece. With Traverse Town safe from the Heartless, Sora and crew made their way to Cid in the First District to see if he could make use of the new gummi. After a careful inspection, Cid determined that, like the last set, this gummi also had a pair and told the trio to return when they found it. With the town safe for now and many new quests undertaken in addition to finding Mickey, Kairi, and the once again disappeared Riku, the trio set out from Traverse Town. Remembering the tournament mentioned by the Moggle in the Accessory Shop, the trio set their course for the Olympus Coliseum.
