I was sad to hear that Cynthia Lennon had died - although you do forget how old she was - the first wife of John Lennon who had to be anonymous for a long time while the Beatles made it - and seemed accessible to their fans as single sex objects. In fact of course John was not averse to substantial screwing anyway. She had Julian before they were married - and then subsequently John found Yoko Ono who satisfied much else in his life, while it lasted. Still, Cynthia has place in the history of popular culture in the UK

And on a personal level I got a phone call to say that the proprietor of a small hotel in Italy which we have stayed in a number of times over the last 25 years has died - and the hotels now closed. SW.. stayed there a long time ago on a field trip - and when we both went back it was great to see nothing had changed - and continued like that on later visits. An idiosyncratic owner who had a German artist partner who worked in the loft - and we discussed art - and she showed me a pair of Napoleon’s sister’s knickers (large) which the owner had acquired (framed). It was like being in a hotel in the 1920s with balconies and a Tuscan garden - and the scent of lime trees. We sat out at night in the darkness drinking campari and sodas - and ate al fresco lunches on the balcony with a bottle of red wine. We were hoping to go back next year - but no chance. Another part of one’s life has slipped away - but left wonderful memories.

And it is still raining here!!!!
