This Friday 20:03:2015 is the day of the partial solar eclipse, people north of the British Islas were able to watch the glory of a Total Solar Eclipse.
Despite having the sun here a few weeks back, I couldn’t see the it this morning, we might have the light but the sun is among the trees; I had a pair of safety glasses free with my monthly ‘Sky at Night’ magazine but no sun to view! If that wasn’t bag enough I had to be in St Austell by 10.00am, it was already 09.05am and I was waiting by the car for Sweetheart.
I had my Canon G10 with me and the safety glasses, so I turned on the camera and held one side of the safety glasses over the lens; I had time for two exposure’s of the bright spot in the naked trees! Then I was off, it was a strange morning of oddly dull light, and I was sure the temperature had fallen, so I experienced the feel of a solar eclipse; rather than seeing it ………….
At the other end of my journey was at 09.50am, and it was clear to see the light was back, a quick peep through the safety glasses, and there was the sun with a rather smaller bite out of it, and that was it until some date in 2027; I will be Seventy six by then; so I think it is time I started looking after myself!!!
August 2nd 2027, totality will be 10:07:06 and will last two minutes and eighteen seconds. Totality will be seen in Morocco, Spain, Algeria, Libya, Egypt, Saudi Arabia, Yemen and Somalia. We again shall see a partial eclipse, I wonder if I could book a holiday in Spain eleven years ahead.
And after ....
Note. The free with magazine safety glasses were made of rather thin card with a very thin plastic filters, the only thing you can see through these flimsy filters is the sun, these type of filters cut out 99.999% of the sunlight; just looking at the sun with the naked eye can do permanent damage to your eyes! Even the filters that reduce the intensity of the sunlight by 99.99% is recommended to use for no longer than three minutes at a session; don’t ever mess with sun!
