stasis update in poetry

Really,
the only technically valid
status update is
“I am currently hitting ENTER
after writing a status update”.

So when you get a Timehop photo on your facebook,
next year will it Timehop that Timehop?
Will there be recursive nostalgia?
Will you long for the clip show
much as the show from whence they were clipped?
At what point does the difference lose meaning?

Because
living in an eternal now is one thing
but this isn’t even an eternal now
this is an eternal five-seconds ago
concerts experienced through
the video you took moments before
and lives we live
documenting what our lives were
a fragment of time before
in the time it took us to type
what happened to us just before.

Even in journalism or diaries
or on bathroom walls or poetry
the quick little things were statements
composed in days and grunts and reflection
here and now we forever document
the just before here and now
no time to research or introspect
just relay the immediate heartbreaking
glorious ignorant aching shortsighted
feeling of what it was to be
five seconds ago.

Again and again and again and again.

There are pluses and minuses
this is not entirely bad
we can use them as quick notes
we can use them as mile posts
we can use them as breadcrumbs
to bring us back around
to writing it all up more thoroughly later.

If if if
and only if
we can ever step back
and buy ourselves the time to do that work
instead of endlessly relaying
the just-before-now.
