I’m useless at updating here. I’m working most days, that’s going great. I’ve gained enough confidence there to make sure I’m always kept in the loop. Now I get the gossip, the bitchiness, the nice news, whether I ask for it or not. So if course this makes me paranoid that I’m also being gossiped about. The other day I overheard Kerry talking to Jo about how her pregnancy was commencing, so I later asked Jo if she was indeed pregnant and Jo went quiet then said “I thought you knew, sorry....” I hate making people feel uncomfortable, so I said “it’s OK, I don’t see Kerry all that often, she maybe thought she’d already mentioned it.” Then later on that day Kerry apologised for not telling me sooner, confirming what I’d said about not seeing her very often, so Jo had obviously said SOMETHING about me not knowing. I’m not bothered about being talked about, I don’t give them much material to use at work, but working with a group of women aged 18 right though to 70, there’s bound to be a bit of tit for tat. That sounds awful, doesn’t it? But I know that men don’t gossip half as much as women!
But I did manage to get the management couple on my side today. Last week I’d sold the wife of John’s boss an earring and necklace set. She wasn’t sure about it, but I did tell her we didn’t give refunds, only exchanges and she couldn’t bring back the earrings at all. I also told her that they were silver, which is what I’d been told. Today she asked to speak to Manager D and told her I’d mis sold her the items, they weren’t silver at all, she wanted a refund, blah blah…so D stuck up for me, telling her that I’d told her what I’d been told to tell her by the company that provided the jewellery…eventually D gave her a refund (just to get rid I think!) and while D was processing it, boss wife turned to me and we had a brief conversation about John, her concluding with “did he sleep in this morning? The lazy lump!” Now normally I might have laughed, but the fact that she was saying this in front of her friend, my colleague and my boss made me really angry. Later on I was in the office, talking about my holidays, and D mentioned to her husband what had happened. They both said how unprofessional she sounded and stuck up for me when I said what a bitch she could be. Urgh. D then asked me if I was ok or upset by what she’d said and I said I was more angry than anything.
The upshot of that meeting was that I’ve definitely got two days off to go and see Foo Fighters in Manchester in May and I’m going to get paid extra for the holidays I have left over for this financial year. Woohoo! Every other place I’ve ever worked had a “use it or lose it” approach to holidays, so I’m very happy!
