Dr. Leroy Phelps taught at SDSU from 1966 to 1990. Perhaps in protest to department politics, three professors retired at the same time. We helped them move out. After retirement, Lee took up tai chi, supported the Balboa Park Organ Society and the San Diego Succulent Society while enjoying the company of his many friends. He was one of the first to bonsai succulents. I own one of his bonsaied small succulents that still lives despite me.

Here Lee is enjoying Phil’s BBQ licking the sauce off his upper lip while a napkin seems firmly tucked into his turquoise necklace.

  • Himself: He skipped the gym. Celebrating his birthday today with dinner at Phil’s. Friends will join us and make up a party.
  • Herself: Have to see the shoulder man at 0840 and explain why I let fixing my hand distract me from fixing my shoulder. Housekeeping, reading, and dinner out.
  • Reading: I was downstairs without a book so grabbed an Anne McCaffrey I had read only once. It goes down like whipped cream.
  • Balance: Just a few moments of utter physical comfort this morning curled up in bed with my whipped cream book.
