Before Christmas, college was helping Rob and his mates fill out their UCAS forms, which were due in last week. Rob had his personal statement all written up, he’d had it proof read by John (the piss taker), me (the spelling and grammar Nazi) and his college tutor (who would know exactly what it is that universities are looking for). He had his form all filled in ready to go, he just needed his tutor to tick a box to say he’d read his personal statement and to write a reference for him.

Only that never happened. His tutor decided he didn’t want to work for the college any more, wouldn’t write any references or have anything to do with the UCAS forms. So Rob had a restless Christmas worrying about getting his application in on time. He went back to college, thankfully someone else wrote their references, he came home, I paid the fees, the form got sent back and forth a few times due to boxes not being checked and bits being missed out…the form had to be in on Thursday, he finally got it sent in on Wednesday.

On Saturday he got an email from his first choice, Edge Hill, to say he’d had a conditional offer to do criminology and forensics! He has to get a distinction, merit, merit, which he’s on track to exceed anyway.

I’m so happy for him! When I think back to just this time last year, I don’t think I’d believe we’d be where we are with him now. He’s calmed down a HELL of a lot. We’ve had no bother from him, he’s even stopped going to the pub on a Friday night because he wants to save all his wages for uni.

There are a couple of his friends from his course who have also been accepted and they’ve decided they’re going to look into getting a house together, thinking it might be cheaper than all moving into separate halls. I’m going to have to look into that, I’m not entirely convinced myself!

John is currently asleep in the armchair after staying up all night playing Skyrim. Really. I got the kids up for school this morning and he was still on it....I’ve just had to convince him he really didn’t need to buy his companion a horse because I want to watch something on the telly.
