The "good" old days in One day at a time

After my week of social butterfly-ness the weekend was pretty sedate. On Friday night I did go out to a mall with my friend Lou and then we had dinner. I don’t see Lou so often these days. It’s amazing when I think back 20 years (do I sound like I am in a rocking chair?) Lou and I were both Travel Agents and shareholders in our respective businesses. We were cashed up with zero responsibilities and no partners. Once or sometimes twice a year we would head up to Vegas or San Diego for a week of partying and shopping. Now, well y’all know about me, a soon to be 50 year old widow woman, but Lou is married with four kids. She met a guy at the gym, (first boyfriend), got dumped by him, than ran into him a couple of years later over the peas and corn at a local supermarket. They had son number one, got married, had son number two and were chasing the dream of a daughter when she got knocked up again with twin boys. The twins are now 5, and she has recently qualified as a nurse.
Great to catch up with her, but I do a lot of listening - who wants to hear about how I have the same roommate as I had way back then – although we did have a break, have the same job – for a different company earning way less, and am still sometimes seeing the same guy (Rich).
Friends fell into two distinct categories when Mic died – and Lou is definitely on the A team. She rushed up to be with me (and bought a week’s worth of dinners her husband had made for the freezer). Then a few weeks later when I decided to sell the house she came up again with her Father (a retired carpet layer), who fixed the carpet in my house and neither would take a penny for gas or all the work he did. Her Mum babysat all four kids while they made the journey too. Priceless.
So the rest of the weekend, I did a big walk (honestly I can walk for miles with an ipod on), met Terri for a picnic lunch in the local gardens and then spent the rest of my time alternating between trying to tame my own garden and watching old movies.
Next week I am on holiday. Yay me.
