a matter of time in poetry

my memories are filled with songs and movies
I’m astonished that my mind hasn’t been hit
with a copyright take-down lawsuit yet
I’m surprised that some senator
in bed with television company
hasn’t tried to pass legislation
against my nostalgia
my past
my heart

I can’t believe
they haven’t trademarked all my teenage years
taken patents out upon my dreams
monetized my hopes
filled them up with ads for boner pills
enabled cookies on my old regrets
phished my recollections for a debit card number

everybody owns everything privately now
there is no public domain
I can’t imagine that my soul
will stay free much longer
either
